MIT ID cards go digital | MIT News

MIT community members have a new and easier way to navigate campus life at the Institute: the MIT Mobile ID, a digital version of the MIT ID card for iOS and Android devices. Developed prior to the pandemic and released by Information Systems and Technology (IS&T), the MIT Mobile ID can be used just like a physical ID. A simple wave of your device — an iPhone, Apple Watch, or Android phone — near a reader is all it takes to open a door or pay for a coffee.

“The Mobile ID has made my life so convenient on campus overall this semester,” says Danielle Allison, a junior in mechanical engineering. “I can scan into buildings using my watch when my hands are full, and I have easy access to my TechCash and Pharos balances with a single tap.”

In fact, if you routinely walk around with your phone in your hand (or an Apple Watch on your wrist) the MIT Mobile ID will take on the same functionality that your physical MIT ID card does on campus, making it quicker and easier to do routine things such as accessing buildings and parking facilities, paying for food and beverages, and releasing Pharos print jobs. Moreover, if you keep your MIT Mobile ID in your Apple Wallet, you will also be able to view your TechCash and dining dollar balances.

“Throughout the pandemic, our community has been absolutely incredible as they have embraced a variety of new protocols that have helped to ensure the health and safety of the MIT campus,” says Mark V. Silis, vice president for information systems and technology. “The MIT Mobile ID was developed in an accelerated effort as part of the MIT Atlas program’s continuing commitment to transforming the campus experience for our faculty, students, and staff.”

Rapid adoption

After an invitation-only initial pilot phase, the MIT Mobile ID was announced to members of the undergraduate Class of 2025 during Orientation kickoff on Aug. 29. Adoption was swift, with about half of first-year students enabling their digital ID on day one.

As initial transaction data showed the Mobile ID was being used successfully across campus, IS&T proceeded with the full community rollout in mid-September. Since then, adoption and use has been strong. Currently, more than 14,000 community members have enabled their digital IDs. In October, Mobile IDs were used for almost 50,000 transactions (other than building access), more than doubling use in September.

Pre-Covid planning

In conjunction with the Department of Facilities, IS&T began planning for a digital version of the MIT ID back in September 2018. Before digital IDs could be offered to community members, a number of systems and devices would require upgrades or replacements.

Specifically, thousands of access card readers across campus would have to be upgraded. A new application to replace legacy physical access control software that Institute “gatekeepers” have used for decades to grant individuals access to specific spaces would need to be developed. Finally, engineers would have to design, test, and deploy the Mobile ID across a variety of devices.

Card reader replacement began in late 2019 and the rollout of the MIT Mobile ID was initially targeted for community-wide release in 2020. Work was proceeding as planned when the global Covid-19 pandemic hit.

Responding to pandemic challenges and opportunities

To safeguard the health and well-being of the community during the pandemic, MIT established requirements for those who access campus, including regular Covid testing and health attestations. With entry to Institute buildings restricted to those satisfying these requirements, ID cards quickly became vital to mitigating the effect of Covid and making life on campus as safe and seamless as possible.

However, this posed a new challenge, as MIT’s comprehensive measures to manage spread of the virus required issuing physical IDs to many additional people, including all vendors, contractors, and suppliers who supported campus operations. As campus began to reopen and with a commitment to the 2021-22 academic year being fully in-person, a more efficient and practical alternative to printing and managing so many plastic ID cards was needed. A digital ID could speed the onboarding process for new community members, allow for quicker and easier contactless interactions, and enable faster entry to campus spaces, since many people often have their phones in hand.

An additional challenge was determining how to deploy a digital ID across a variety of devices. Fortunately, there was a clear and convenient solution: the MIT Atlas mobile app. The Atlas app has become an essential tool for MIT community members during the pandemic, allowing them to keep up with health screening requirements to access Institute buildings and spaces, declare travel plans, upload vaccination information, and invite visitors to campus. As such, it was a natural platform for deploying the MIT Mobile ID.

A team effort

While the pandemic increased the urgency and scope of the digital ID project (for example, card readers would have to be added to many more building entrances), modernization planning and work done prior to Covid meant that IS&T and its partners didn’t have to start from scratch. As a result, much was completed in the 18 months from the pandemic outbreak to the start of the current school year.

“Teams from the Department of Facilities and IS&T did an incredible job upgrading more than 4,700 card readers, as well as hundreds of access control panels and intrusion alarm systems, at more than 120 buildings across campus,” says Marco Gomes, IS&T’s senior director of infrastructure operations.

Additionally, Gomes noted, team members completed this work while also performing various other critical activities in support of MIT’s safe return to operations. Thanks to those efforts, campus access is now fully integrated with the Covid Pass system, with the MIT Mobile ID playing a central role.

Future enhancements

While the MIT Mobile ID already offers many useful features, in the coming months IS&T and its partners across the Institute will continue to enhance and improve its functionality, including enabling the Mobile ID to be used as a T pass once the MBTA has enabled digital credentials.

In the meantime, MIT community members and affiliates should be sure to keep their physical ID cards, especially for the purposes of identification as well as for riding on the MBTA system. As cards may get lost or damaged, IS&T has made it easier for people to get a new or replacement card using the new self-service card-printing kiosk in the entryway of E17 at 40 Ames Street.

“We envision that the MIT Mobile ID will become an integral part of our campus fabric and help support our community in their efforts to keep us healthy and safe during these challenging times,” says Silis.

Is Social Media Enough – Does My Business Need A Website In 2022?

The modern-day online landscape looks very different from
its humble beginnings. The advent of the internet was born
on a rocky foundation of simple, static web pages with an
antiquated yet charming aesthetic. There’s something
nostalgic about these relics of our online past, but the
decades that have preceded them have brought on an evolution
that early adopters of the internet had no ability to
predict. Websites have evolved to become sophisticated and
elegant, custom website design and website development have
created endless possibilities. We’ve moved from websites
being read-only based content, to a fully interactive
experience.

The latest waves of web applications,
known as web 2.0 and 3.0 offered the tools for social media
to be built on. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Tick Tok
have become essential means for businesses to reach out and
connect with their audiences. Social integrations create an
easy to manage an environment that businesses can quickly
show off new products, communicate and engage with their
audience and even build extensive advertising and marketing
campaigns.

There’s no doubt that web 3.0
applications have played a major role in how businesses find
new customers and sell products or services. The barrier to
entry is tiny to create an online presence for your business
due to these platforms being so easily accessible. However,
to think that this is all you need to maximise your
businesses turnover and revenue is misguided. Don’t fall
into the trap of thinking this is enough, your business
needs a custom
website
designed specifically for it, and here are some
reasons why.

Creating the Perfect, Curated
Environment For Your Customers

While having an online
presence on a 3rd party’s platform is an important
ingredient in the online business pie, it still isn’t
truly yours. While things like your social media are
incredible tools for outreach, they limit you in their
ability to tailor them exactly to your business needs. You
have to adapt your business aesthetic and communication
style to fit the platform’s parameters. Perhaps your
products aren’t done justice in the manner in which you
are forced to display them? Or the display pic and banner
layout don’t work for your branding? Or perhaps something
as simple as Facebook’s garish blue clashes with your
brand’s colour pallet.

And then there’s the
unpredictable algorithm for organic reach. All bow towards
the algorithm gods.

A custom-built
website
grants you full control over how your
products or services are presented. Web design allows you to
tailor your website to take advantage of your branding,
rather than compromising it for a third party platform’s
layout and user interface. This allows you to guide the
customer journey, presenting your products and services in a
perfectly curated order to ensure that they gain perspective
into the full spectrum of what you offer, ultimately
increasing your conversion rate. A custom-built website
allows you to have full consistency between branding,
imagery and copywriting to deliver your brand’s message in
the most optimal way.

Getting your Customers Full
Attention

Most people have grown used to swiping
through content at an extraordinarily fast rate. With all
the noise online, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to
hold the attention of online users. This is particularly
true with social media marketing, where your brand is just
another post in a quickly refreshed news feed. As stated
earlier, these third-party platforms are important tools for
initially grabbing your customers attention, but your next
step should be to get them out of the current digital
ecosystem they are in and into yours. Pulling them away from
social media and into your world.

Social media
platforms and other online aggregates are designed for rapid
navigation. Their business model is to keep their users
churning through their content to keep them on their site as
long as possible. Your business is not a priority, it is
just another piece of content. By drawing these users off
these platforms and onto your website, you have their full
attention. Your business is now able to dictate the pace of
communication, and with a well designed UI in place and a
strategic funnel set up, you can lead your clients all the
way to a conversion. This conversion may be selling a
product, booking a service, or signing up to your mailing
list.

Search Engine Optimisation is the Unsung Hero
of Successful Online Businesses.

Up until now,
we’ve spoken about web 3.0 apps such as social media, but
haven’t even mentioned the giant elephant in the room –
Google. A large portion of the success of the internet as a
utility for business has been carved out by the development
of search engines. Prior to their inception, users needed to
already know the URLs they were heading to, and casual
browsing was almost impossible. Search engines changed this,
providing a quick and intuitive way for people to navigate
the world wide web. While there are multiple search engines
available, there is no doubt that Google rules them all.
While the nature of social media platforms tends to cater to
specific demographics, Google caters to them all. It is the
go-to tool for customers looking for services and products,
and as online shopping increases exponentially every year,
not being able to be found on Google can be a death sentence
for a business.

Through strategic web design and web
development, businesses can craft a website that is
optimised to be found on Google easily. It allows you to
create multiple pages that focus on specific search terms,
allowing your online presence to be spread across a wider
set of enquiries. This allows multiple inlets into your
website, saving potential customers time and increasing your
conversion rates.

While paid advertising has a place
in ensuring success, at the end of the day your website
design and development are going to be a major factor in how
successful it is. Creating beautiful engaging websites with
rich content and imagery that pops is the backbone of doing
business online. This requires expert website design, while
an inexperienced website development team ensures that all
technical aspects such as page load speed, image size, and
site architecture ready your website for Google’s search
engine.

Final Thoughts

Don’t be misled into
thinking that having a social presence is enough for running
a successful business in 2022. A well-designed website,
tailored to your business’s needs is the final destination
for all conversion online. Your marketing, advertising, and
social presence all need to lead somewhere, and that place
should be your website. Lime Digital’s proven track record
for designing and developing awe-inspiring websites has led
our diverse portfolio of clients to higher levels of organic
traffic, conversion rates, and revenue generation. Don’t
leave money on the table when it comes to your online
presence, see what Lime
Digital’s website design and development
can do for
your business

Most Exciting Fall Tech 2021

Last Thursday marked the return of Pepcom NYC, a consumer tech industry press event. We took a trip out to Manhattan to meet with manufacturers like Worx, Seagate, and TCL so that they could show us some of their latest gadgets and upcoming products. While this year was a bit smaller than previous shows due to COVID, there was still plenty to see. Here’s the most innovative gear from the show with features and aesthetics that stand out from competitors in their respective categories.

Smarter Robot Lawn Mowers

Hunter Fenollol

WR147 Landroid M Robotic Lawn Mower

WORX
amazon.com

$1,044.13

We’re no strangers to lawn-mowing robots, so we were excited to see Worx’s latest Landroid models packing some impressive features. With microblades that cut to the edge of your lawn’s perimeter and an adjustable blade height (from 1.5 to 3.6 inches), the Landroids ensure an even and deep trim. The starter Landroid Model S is perfect for smaller yards up to ⅛ with a 2.0Ah battery. The premium Landroid L triples the battery and cut distance up to 6.0Ah and ½ acre lots.

Programming the robots is as simple as using the smartphone app or onboard LCD screen. And when the battery is low or rainfall starts getting heavy, the Landroids automatically return to their base station. If you’re worried about the bots running over sticks, rocks, or the occasional lawn dart, the floating blade system automatically adjusts cutting clearance height to avoid any obstructions. Worx also included a neat party trick: You can pop out the Landroid’s battery and swap it into over 35 models of the brand’s power tools.

A Cordless Vinyl Turntable

Hunter Fenollol

Revolution GO Portable Record Player

Victrola
amazon.com

$199.99

A portable vinyl record player wasn’t on our bingo card for Pepcom this year, but Victrola surprised us with the Revolution GO—the world’s first portable, rechargeable, Bluetooth record player. I had plenty of reservations about the table from a design and sound standpoint because of the portability, but walked away impressed by the onboard speakers’ full stereo sound and passive bass radiator. You can even stream a vinyl record to other external Bluetooth speakers via the GO. While we wish the folding handle had a more rounded shape for grip, it’s comfortable, and there’s a shoulder strap to distribute weight evenly across your body.

Look close enough at the dust cover in the picture above and you can see grooves inside of it, which act as record holders for up to five albums. Victrola claims the GO offers a 12-hour battery life, but without a visual battery indicator we were unable to calculate an estimated battery drain rate during the three hour event. If you love the way vinyl captures every note, the GO is the best vinyl player option for bringing that sound with you. I don’t know if I’d necessarily bring the GO to the beach, like Victrola’s reps at the show kept using as an example. But for a gathering of friends or simply moving a music setup between rooms, this is a really helpful device.

Smart Home Devices With Extensive Integration & Control

Hunter Fenollol

GE’s appliances have been a staple in American homes for over 116 years. With a relatively recent jump into the smart home space with the Cync lineup, GE’s devices offer plenty of control and integration options at an affordable price. At the moment the complete system consists of the Indoor Smart Camera, Full Color Floodlight, and Outdoor Smart Plug. Integrating smoothly with Google and Alexa smart hubs, the Cync app itself allows for some deep customization and control, boasting features like TrueImage capture, which overlays lighting color selections over your space in real-time for a preview. The Indoor Smart Camera offers a privacy shutter, built-in SD card for local storage, and a 1080p resolution. It looks crisp on a phone display, and the local card storage makes it easy to save recordings without a subscription.

The GE Cync Lineup of Plugs, Lights, and Cameras.

Hunter Fenollol

The outdoor smart plug allows for advanced programming capabilities based on the time of day or custom scheduling, independent control over the two sockets, and scene control. While GE brought the possibilities of the plug to life using a timely holiday light demo, I can see this being really useful for outdoor TVs or speaker systems in warmer climates. I wish I could have thrown some water at the plug while I held it, as GE claims that the device is all-weather safe for exposure to rain, dirt, and snow.

An Affordable 8K TV For The Sharpest Image Quality

Hunter Fenollol

65-inch Class 6-Series 8K TV

Front and center at the event entrance stood the new 8K 6-Series TCL television. With a higher color range and sharper resolution than 4K TVs can produce, native 8K content looked noticeably crisper on the display. We actually have this model in our testing lab at the moment, and we’ve found that even 4K content upscaled to 8K looks better, with the AI preventing any artifacts or distortions in the sharper picture. The biggest draw outside of performance is the $1,999 price tag for the 65-inch model. This is much lower than best 65-inch 4K TVs available with the performance and 8K capabilities offering more bang for your buck.

There are two HDMI 2.1 ports to plug in the latest gaming consoles and streaming devices for viewing in 120-Hz 4K and 60-Hz 8K content. The speakers are good enough, but audiophiles will definitely want to migrate an existing sound system or upgrade for the best home theater or gaming setup available.

Studio-Quality Portable Recorder That Doubles As A USB Mic

Hunter Fenollol

USB-C Microphone

Tula Mics
amazon.com

$229.00

Small enough to slide into your palm or pocket, this portable recorder doubles as a USB condenser microphone for professional audio. That means you can record a podcast or music and take calls with the microphone for up to 12 hours on battery or plug it in over USB for a constant power source. Despite the noise of the packed Pepcom venue hall, my audio test recordings had minimal background chatter, and my voice sounded full, without any distortion.

To achieve rich audio from direct sound sources and the surrounding environment, the Tula microphone uses cardioid and omni mics. The cardioid microphones face the front of the device to clearly capture interviews or personal recordings from a single direction. Omnidirectional ECM capsules pointing in various directions capture a surrounding sound—better for live performances or group talks. The tech that achieves this mix of portability and sound quality is great but takes up room—I wish the device allowed for more than eight gigabytes of internal storage. If you want to attach a lavalier microphone, the headphone jack also doubles as an audio-capture input.

A Smart Lock And Video Doorbell Combined

Hunter Fenollol

Vision Deadbolt

Lockly
amazon.com

$409.99

The Lockly Vision smart lock includes a built-in video camera and biometric fingerprint scanner. You can see who’s at your door with a glance of the app and unlock your door with a passcode, fingerprint, app, voice control, or with your original keys. During my demonstration, I was unable to make out the code entered on the keypad’s screen from three feet away thanks to Lockly’s PIN Genie software. Built to prevent peaking, the keypad’s display shifts around the position of passcode numbers so that your taps can’t be mimicked.

The lock includes a Wi-Fi bridge, so you can connect it to your smart-home ecosystem of choice and remotely lock the door or talk to visitors from anywhere with an internet connection. For side doors, the Lockly Flex (coming later this year) pares down the feature set to just the fingerprint lock and Bluetooth operation, making it much more affordable at a third of the Vision’s price.

Plug And Play SSD Drive For Xbox Series X|S

Hunter Fenollol

Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S

Seagate
amazon.com

$299.87

While Seagate drives are fast and reliable across computers and gaming consoles, the Xbox SSD proved to be our favorite drive at the show. With a PS5 or PC, you need to properly seat a stick-like SSD, which takes a bit of time and skill. The Xbox drive is a cartridge-based, plug-and-play system that clicks right into the console. You still get the rapid read and write speeds of an internal SSD, just with a better design that now goes up to two terabytes.

Seagate’s New Star Wars Themed Drives

Hunter Fenollol

The Beskar Ingot drives offer high performance versions of the Firecuda PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and SATA drives in a stylized look straight from The Mandolorian. While these drives won’t be available until later this season, they’re awesome for any fan or collector who wants to spice up the look of their PC’s interior.

A Flashlight That Jumpstarts Your Car Battery

PBJF600 PowerUp 600 Torch

Scosche
amazon.com

$99.99

Combining a car jump starter, a phone charger, and a flashlight into one device, the Scosche PowerUp 600 Torch can streamline your emergency car kit. The 600-amp flashlight jumps engines up to eight liters and diesel engines up to two liters three times from a full charge. You won’t be able to look across a dark field with the 300-lumen bulb, but the flashlight will provide illumination of the immediate area in a pinch.

In scenarios where you simply need to provide your phone or laptop with juice, the 2,000-mAh battery serves as a portable power bank. The torch comes fully charged, and the battery will hold that charge for up to six months. The grip felt quite sturdy and withstood some bangs on a table and five-foot drops without suffering any dents or dings.

A Virtually Indestructible Smart Flip Phone

Hunter Fenollol

The Cat S22 rugged touchscreen flip phone is tough, packs Android 11 OS, and has retro physical touch keys. The rubberized TPU outer is quite grippy, and the hinge offers a satisfying opening click and snap upon closing. Running the phone on T-Mobile 4G LTE, demo web pages loaded within seconds, and the Google Assistant support was swift.

With an IP68 rating and MIL SPEC 810H certification, the phone is waterproof, chemical-resistant, survives drops, and can withstand extreme weather changes. If you work in a setting that might not be gentle on smartphones, such as a trade or construction, the CAT S22 is easy to use and built to last, with the full feature set of an Android smartphone.

A Kid-Safe Cell Phone and Smart Watch With GPS Tracking

Z2 Smartphone

Gabb

$99.99

The Gabb kids phones aren’t as tough as the CAT S22 above, but they’ll withstand plenty of daily abuse while offering enough functionality. Parents can track their children using GPS, while kids can call and text but (most importantly) not access the internet. The Z2’s slick physical design rivals any Android smartphone today without any of the smarts, so you don’t have to worry about your offspring accessing sites and apps they shouldn’t be.

GABB kids phone watches.

Hunter Fenollol

The Gabb Watch is a smartphone watch ideal for younger children. Little ones can make calls, send pre-set texts or voice messages, and count their steps with an easy to use watch. The optional virtual pet app built into the device requires walks, washes, and food to teach caretaking skills and responsibility. It’s cute and brought me back to my childhood Tamagotchi days.
