Iconic West Palm Beach business marks 100 years | Technology News

WEST PALM Seashore, Fla. (AP) — Halsey & Griffith Inc. started as a 168-square-foot stationery retail store in downtown West Palm Seaside in 1921, and this month the family members-owned enterprise that has reinvented alone several times is celebrating the iconic business’s 100th anniversary.

Started by John L. Griffith and William L. Halsey, the firm has persevered in the face of hurricanes, the Terrific Despair, World War II, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1991 and a 1993 restructuring, when it shifted its emphasis from retail to the copier business enterprise.

Longtime spot residents will remember its heyday from the 1960s to the 1980s, when its shop at 313 Datura St. was the place to go for business office, art and engineering materials, cameras and photographic materials, publications, items and greeting playing cards.

“Plus it was air-conditioned! Anyone in West Palm Seashore shopped at Halsey & Griffith,” the company’s president, Robert L. “Robbie” Siemon, 72, explained. James Waugh, Robert’s grandfather, acquired Halsey & Griffith from the founders in 1948.

Halsey’s, as it was typically identified as, turned a regional chain with 11 merchants from Vero Seaside to Boca Raton. In the 1980s, Halsey & Griffith was a single of the area’s top business office suppliers, employing 175 men and women and reporting annual earnings of $12.5 million.

Several improvements have occurred considering that then. In 2016, the company rebranded alone as HGi Systems, right after it moved away from advertising business home furnishings and supplies. Now, Siemon claimed, It’s a South Florida leader in the copier organization, marketing and servicing copiers, printers, mailing systems and doc-administration systems.

With an workplace in West Palm Seashore and a distribution heart in Miami Gardens close to the Golden Glades Interchange, the now 45-worker enterprise serves buyers in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

This yr, HGi started off a new enterprise beneath the Halsey & Griffith umbrella, HGi Engineering Products and services, a total-assistance IT enterprise. “We believe our IT Products and services will be a quite critical part of our small business in the upcoming,” Siemon mentioned.

In January, Siemon’s son Blake, 48, who started out doing work whole-time at the business in 1999, will turn into its president, even though Robert Siemon will continue to function there. Robert’s brother James manages the economic conclude of the business. The two have led the enterprise because 1989 soon after their late father, Robert T. “Bob” Siemon, retired.

Blake Siemon, a graduate of Forest Hill Substantial School and Florida Atlantic University, worked at Halsey & Griffith’s warehouse on Outdated Okeechobee Road when he was in substantial college.

“A whole lot of kids from Forest Hill worked there and showed up right after hours to pull orders that were being prepared for supply at 5 a.m. the up coming early morning,” Blake Siemon said.

The enlargement into IT providers focuses on purchaser support and great suggestions for little to medium-sized businesses.

“For a handful of a long time we have been supporting people today with efficiencies, computer software and digital workflow and articles administration. It hasn’t been a large element of our company. We are taking that expertise and heading into IT providers,” Blake stated.

One particular of the most difficult periods occurred immediately after the initial business provide superstore opened in Boca Raton in 1988. A West Palm Seashore area quickly adopted. Quite a few mom-and-pop business offer suppliers throughout the nation went out of business enterprise.

“The superstores compelled us to change our target when I took around the enterprise in 1989. We knew we had to diversify. We did not get out of the place of work provide small business until eventually 2018. We downsized significantly to a few destinations,” Siemon reported.

Halsey & Griffith turned an authorized Ricoh copier seller. They earlier had marketed the copiers, but unfortunately the adjust did not happen quickly plenty of, and the corporation was compelled to file for personal bankruptcy. By January 1993, however, it experienced paid out off its personal debt and could after yet again purchase on credit from suppliers.

“At that place I built the choice to go to Miami and operate the copier division,” Robert Siemon claimed. “Before that I experienced an outside the house particular person. I commuted on Tri-Rail for 30 decades, until finally the pandemic.”

A new era experienced started, and development ongoing in the copier division, placing the business back on stable footing. The Siemons attribute the company’s longevity to a services-oriented way of doing small business that goes back again to founders Halsey and Griffith and was continued underneath their family’s ownership.

“Blake represents the fourth generation of the Waugh/Siemon family members to serve in a management part in the organization,” Robert reported. “This is anything we are really very pleased of due to the fact only 3 p.c of family enterprises are even now in company in the fourth technology.”

“Halsey & Griffith has expert several ups and downs, but we have been in enterprise for 100 many years,” Siemon reported. “Halsey & Griffith has been a large element of the West Palm Beach local community for the past 100 many years and has used additional than 1,000 individuals.”

The company was founded through the actual estate growth of the 1920s when Griffith and Halsey, like 1000’s of some others, arrived to West Palm Beach front to make their fortunes. Griffith recognized the need to have for a stationery retailer and opened a 12-by-14-foot retail outlet on what was Poinsettia Avenue.

Within just a 12 months, Griffith moved the retail outlet to a larger sized locale at 220 S. Dixie Highway, and then to the Guaranty Building. At seven stories, it was just one of West Palm Beach’s to start with “skyscrapers.” Developed in 1922, it is now on the Countrywide Register of Historic Spots and is found at the corner of South Olive Avenue and Datura Street.

During this time, Halsey approached Griffith and offered to set up some dollars to grow to be a husband or wife, founding the Halsey & Griffith firm in 1923. In 1925, the downtown retailer was moved to 313 Datura St., a home Halsey owned. The creating initially had three storefronts on the floor ground. Halsey’s occupied 1 and rented the other two. The top two floors ended up the Halsey Hotel.

The early years were not usually uncomplicated. The Fantastic Miami Hurricane hit on Sept. 11, 1926, and halted the Florida land increase. Then on Sept. 6, 1928, the Okeechobee Hurricane struck West Palm Seashore and prompted the Lake Okeechobee dike to fall short. Far more than 2,500 people today died in the hurricane and several of them drowned in the Glades area all over the lake.

Up coming arrived the stock sector crash of 1929, and the enterprise limped alongside for the following 15 or so a long time.

Through Environment War II, producing limitations on objects not connected to the war hampered materials. It was not till right after the war ended these materials started to move and organization began to improve. In 1955, Griffith and Halsey died within just six months of each other.

But nationwide, times have been good, and the retail enterprise started to develop, with the 1st branch retail outlet opening in 1957. The last new branch debuted in Port St. Lucie in 1990.

“In addition to advertising place of work supplies, and furnishings, we also offered art materials,” the late Margaret Siemon wrote in a business heritage. “The famed Black artists, the Highwaymen, acquired or traded their art for paint and canvases above the decades.”

Although typewriters and carbon paper are no for a longer period utilized, the Siemons emphasize that their mission has remained the exact same as a reliable lover for Florida enterprises.

“What fulfills me is that there is a legacy, not just that of my spouse and children, but the superior name of the corporation that we get to carry on and implement to distinct issues,” Blake Siemon reported. “We are a relic of a bygone era as to how we approach organization. That does not make us inconsequential. People today continue to want to start with-course service.”

Facebook exposes mercenary spy firms that targeted 50,000 people

Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc is calling out half a dozen private surveillance companies for hacking or other abuses, accusing them in a report published Thursday of collectively targeting about 50,000 people across its platforms.

The company’s fight with the spy firms comes amid a wider move by American tech companies, U.S. lawmakers and President Joe Biden’s administration against purveyors of digital espionage services, notably the Israeli spyware company NSO Group, which was blacklisted earlier this month following weeks of revelations about how its technology was being deployed against civil society.

Meta is already suing NSO in a U.S. court. Nathaniel Gleicher, Meta’s head of security policy, told Reuters that Thursday’s crackdown was meant to signal that “the surveillance-for-hire industry is much broader than one company.”

Meta’s report said it was suspending roughly 1,500, mostly fake accounts run by seven organizations across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta said the entities targeted people in more than 100 countries.

Meta did not provide a detailed explanation of how it identified the surveillance firms, but it operates some of the world’s biggest social and communications networks and regularly touts its ability to find and remove malicious actors from its platforms.

Among them is Israel’s Black Cube, which became notorious for deploying its spies on behalf of Hollywood rapist Harvey Weinstein. Meta said the intelligence firm was deploying phantom personas to chat its targets up online and gather their emails, “likely for later phishing attacks.”

In a statement, Black Cube said it “does not undertake any phishing or hacking” and said the firm routinely ensured “all our agents’ activities are fully compliant with local laws.”

Others called out by Meta include BellTroX, an Indian cyber mercenary firm exposed by Reuters and the internet watchdog Citizen Lab last year, an Israeli company called Bluehawk CI, and a European firm named Cytrox – all of whom Meta accused of hacking.

Cognyte, which was spun off from security giant Verint Systems Inc in February, and Israeli firms Cobwebs Technologies were accused not of hacking but of using fake profiles to trick people into revealing private data.

Cognyte, Verint and Bluehawk did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

In an email, Cobwebs spokesperson Meital Levi Tal said the company drew on open sources and that its products “are not intrusive by any means.” Messages left with Ivo Malinovski – who until recently identified himself as Cytrox’s chief executive on LinkedIn – received no immediate response. BellTroX founder Sumit Gupta has not returned Reuters reporters’ messages since his firm was exposed last year. He had previously denied wrongdoing.

Gleicher refused to identify any of the targets by name but Citizen Lab, in a report published at the same time as Meta’s, said that one of Cytrox’s victims was Egyptian opposition figure Ayman Nour.

Nour blamed the Egyptian government for the spying, telling Reuters in an interview from Istanbul that he had long suspected he was under surveillance by officials there.

“For the first time I have evidence,” he said.

Egyptian authorities did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Gleicher said other targets of the spy firms included celebrities, politicians, journalists, lawyers, executives and regular citizens. Friends and family of the targets were also swept up in the espionage campaigns, he said.

Meta cybersecurity official David Agranovich said he hoped Thursday’s announcement would “kickstart the disruption of the surveillance-for-hire market.” There were some signs that other social media firms were taking similar action, with Twitter announcing the removal of 300 accounts a few hours after Meta’s announcement.

Whether the takedowns deal the companies involved more than a temporary setback remains to be seen. Two of the companies, Black Cube and BellTroX, have bounced back after being embroiled in previous spy scandals.

Gleicher said that targets of the spy firms would receive automated warnings, but he said Facebook would stop short of identifying the specific firms involved or their clients. That’s despite the fact that Facebook said it had identified several customers of Cobwebs, Cognyte, Cytrox, and Black Cube – the latter of which includes law firms.

Marta Pardavi, one of several Hungarian human rights defenders who say they were targeted by Black Cube in 2017 and 2018, said she was gratified by the news of Facebook’s report but wanted more information.

“They name law firms,” she said. “But law firms have clients. Who are the clients for these law firms?”

Climate tech investment is soaring this year: PwC

Investment in companies developing technology to try to combat the climate crisis grew to $87.5 billion in the year leading up to Jun. 30, according to new research from PwC published Wednesday.

That’s up 210{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} on the $24.8 billion that was invested in climate tech in the same period the year before, the financial services firm said in its PwC “State of Climate Tech 2021” report, adding that 14 cents of every venture capital dollar now goes to climate tech.

But venture capital and private equity companies aren’t necessarily backing the right climate tech companies, according to PwC.

The firm focuses on what it says are the five leading technology solutions: solar power, wind power, food waste technology, green hydrogen production, and alternative foods/low greenhouse gas proteins. It says these five received just 25{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of the climate tech investment between 2013 and Jun. 2021, despite technologies in these areas representing over 80{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of the emissions reduction potential by 2050.

The lion’s share of climate tech funding, some $58 billion, went to mobility and transportation companies, PwC said. That includes companies focused on e-scooters, electric vehicles and flying taxis.

The average size of a climate tech deal almost quadrupled to $96 million in the first half of 2021, up from $27 million one year prior, PwC said, adding that the number of active climate tech investors rose from less than 900 in the first half of 2020 to over 1,600 in the first half of 2021.

Climate tech SPACs (special purpose acquisition companies) raised $25 billion in the first half of 2021, accounting for more than a third of all the climate tech funding during the period.

While overall growth is up, the number of early stage, seed and series A investments in climate tech has remained largely stagnant since 2018, PwC said, adding that there’s a need to fund more young climate tech start-ups that have the potential to become companies worth $1 billion or even $10 billion.

On Tuesday, French climate tech start-up Sweep announced that it has raised a $22 million series A round led by Balderton Capital, a venture firm based in London that has also backed urban navigation app Citymapper, e-scooter firm Voi and on-demand car service Virtuo.

In terms of geography, U.S. climate tech companies are attracting the most venture capital funding, with $56.5 billion going to start-ups in the country in the year leading up to Jun. 30. PwC said Chinese climate tech companies raised the second highest amount, with $9 billion.

The world has 10 years to halve global greenhouse emissions if it is to have any hope of achieving net zero by 2050.

“Innovation is critical to meeting the challenge and the good news is that climate tech investment is up significantly across the board,” Emma Cox, global climate leader at PwC U.K., said in a statement.

“However, our research has found there is potential to better channel and incentivize investment in technology areas that have the greatest future emissions reduction potential. This raises the question of why these sectors are missing out — are investors missing a value opportunity or is there an incentive problem that needs the attention of policy makers?”

Over the decades, many investors have chosen not to back climate tech start-ups over concerns that they may not deliver a suitable financial return. There was a period of rapid growth between 2013 and 2018 but climate tech investment plateaued between 2018 and 2020, according to PwC, which attributed the slowdown to macroeconomic trends and the global pandemic.

However, investment rebounded sharply in the first half of 2021 as environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) was thrust into the spotlight and companies committed to net-zero strategies.

Exclusive-Malaysia Telcos Call for Second 5G Provider, Sources Say | Technology News

By Rozanna Latiff and Liz Lee

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – Malaysia’s major wireless carriers have recommended the government allow a second 5G service to be set up, according to three sources and documents seen by Reuters, ahead of a cabinet decision on whether to go ahead with a plan for a single wholesale network.

The cabinet will decide by January whether to allow multiple 5G providers, following concern from industry players that a single state-run network could hamper competition, Communications and Multimedia Minister Annuar Musa said last week.

Reuters in November reported an impasse between mobile operators and Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), the state agency tasked with deploying 5G, over pricing and transparency issues.

DNB plans to launch an initial 5G rollout in three central areas on Wednesday.

Representatives from the country’s six mobile operators met with ministry officials on Monday to propose solutions to the deadlock and their ideas for deploying 5G, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

The people, including two telecoms company officials, requested anonymity as the discussions were private.

Four operators – Axiata Group’s Celcom, DiGi.com, Maxis and U Mobile – recommended the government allow two wholesale 5G networks, each to be built and operated by a consortium of carriers, the sources said.

In a presentation seen by Reuters, the operators proposed the consortia commence the two networks in parallel next year and separate them from 2023, “giving Malaysia fast initial deployment and then the security of dual competing networks going forward”.

The two organisations will make use of existing telco assets to “coordinate rollout and collaborate in the first 12-18 months to achieve faster rollout of 5G across Malaysia than any one party”, the slides showed.

The carriers would also be open to proposals that would allow them to own equity in DNB, and asked for greater inclusion in the government’s rollout plans, the sources said.

“We hope there will be continued consultation on the matter, given the deep implications for the country’s digital economy ambitions,” one of the sources said.

Another carrier, YTL Communications, objected to the plan and expressed support for a single 5G network, while Telekom Malaysia said it would back any decision made by the government, the sources said.

DiGi.com, U Mobile, and YTL declined to comment. The communications ministry, Axiata, Maxis, and Telekom Malaysia did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.

DNB said it was not privy to the discussions held.

“We will respect the process adopted by the government and will make our representations at the appropriate forum,” DNB CEO Ralph Marshall said in an email to Reuters.

The government in February scrapped a plan to apportion spectrum to carriers, opting instead for a single shared network in a bid to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and accelerate infrastructure buildup.

Carriers are worried the plan would result in a nationalised monopoly more costly than deploying 5G on their own, though DNB has said it will charge operators less to access its 5G network than the cost they incurred for 4G.

DNB has also offered free 5G services to carriers until March 31 as it seeks to finalise long-term wholesale agreements with operators.

Telekom Malaysia this month became the first operator to sign up for 5G trials with DNB, but did not say if it had signed a long-term deal.

Harley takes its electric motorcycle company public via SPAC | Technology News

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Harley-Davidson will take its electric motorcycle division public through a blank-check company, valuing the enterprise that has been part of the Harley for 10 years at $1.77 billion.

The news gave a jolt to long-suffering shares of Harley-Davidson, which jumped 12{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} before the opening bell Monday.

Under the agreement, the special purpose acquisition company AEA-Bridges Impact Corp. will buy Harley-Davidson’s LiveWire and make it the first publicly traded electric motorcycle company in the U.S. next year.

LiveWire has been part of the Milwaukee motorcycle maker for 10 years and became a separate unit in 2019.

Harley-Davidson Chairman and CEO Jochen Zeitz will hold the same positions at LiveWire for up to two years after the deal closes.

LiveWire’s stock is expected to list on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “LVW.”

Special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, are used as a shortcut to go public, bypassing the lengthy and costly process of a traditional initial public offering.

SPACs exploded in popularity last year, reaching a fever pitch early in 2021 when they were raising an average of $6 billion every week. They offer investors a way to get into those exciting, potentially high-growth companies or companies or industries, and few sectors are as hot lately as electric vehicle makers.

Companies going the SPAC route often feel more license to highlight projections for big growth they’re expecting in the future, for example. In a traditional IPO, the company is limited to highlighting its past performance, not necessarily the greatest selling point for young startups that have little to show for in sales or profits.

Once the transaction closes, Harley-Davidson will keep an approximately 74{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} equity interest in LiveWire. ABIC’s shareholders will own about 17{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca}, and ABIC’s founders and Taiwanese powersports company KYMCO will own approximately 4{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} each.

The deal has been approved by the boards of Harley-Davidson and ABIC and if it gets the approval of ABIC shareholders, it is expected to close in the first half of next year.

Shares of Harley-Davidson, Inc. jumped $4.25 to $41.06 in premarket trading, but are down more than 3{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} over the past year.
