How China’s Huawei technology is being used to censor news halfway across the world

When a staffer at the independent media website Iwacu in the central African state of Burundi tried to visit the outlet online in late October, they received an error message instead. “Hum. Nous ne parvenons pas à trouver ce site;” the site could not be found  – even though the local media regulator had promised to unblock it in February.

A report published in August found Burundian networks using technology from Chinese company Huawei to block Iwacu and other news sites. The report was funded and published by PrivacyCo, the parent company of privacy research and advice website Top10VPN.com. Co-authors Valentin Weber and Vasilis Ververis, PhD candidates at the University of Oxford and Humboldt University of Berlin respectively, told CPJ in a recent video call about their research tracking Huawei equipment known as middleboxes to internet networks in 72 countries, 18 of which were using the devices to block news or other websites. (Weber has since joined the German Council on Foreign Relations as a cyber research fellow.)

In Cuba, the report found the sole state-controlled internet service provider ETECSA using Huawei technology to block independent news website Cubanet, among others; authorities in Cuba have subjected Cubanet and its journalists to frequent restrictions. Readers can bypass blocks using virtual private networks (VPN), but many news outlets must shift their work to other sites or social media. In Egypt, a number of outlets have gone out of business after being blocked.

Middlebox devices can examine the packets of data that facilitate browsing and communication using a process called deep packet inspection. DPI has benign, even essential functions, like making connections faster or caching content for future access, but it can also be used to manipulate or filter information, the authors said. In the wrong hands, a middlebox could divert visitors to a rogue website designed to steal passwords or install malware, for example.

Such intrusions are hard to detect, but the 18 countries in the report acknowledge blocking – notifying users via their browsers that the content they are trying to access is restricted – making censorship a starting point for researchers to assess whether countries are using middleboxes to undermine human rights, according to Weber and Ververis.

Glenn Schloss and Rob Manfredo of Huawei’s U.S. corporate communications team acknowledged CPJ’s request for an interview when the report was initially published, but did not subsequently respond to emailed questions.

The interview with Weber and Ververis has been edited for length and clarity.

You describe Huawei’s middleboxes performing “online behavior management” – where does that term come from?

Weber: It comes from Huawei marketing material relating to a specific middlebox, the ASG5000 series. We found it in a Chinese language source, so it’s our translation, but I think it matches the capabilities well – it can detect traffic and act on it, managing the behavior of [internet] users in various contexts and venues.

Why are you concerned about the security implications of middleboxes on national networks?

Weber: Important traffic is flowing through these devices but the policies [for the data Huawei receives from them] sometimes weren’t clear – what happens to the data, or whether it can be transferred further. For different continents or territories, we found a database location – in Mexico for Latin America for example – but you wouldn’t know what happens once the data is transferred there.

Ververis: An analogy for a consumer would be a cleaning robot that sends data to the vendor about the dimensions of your house. Hopefully it’s in good faith, but I would not be surprised if that data was being sold or analyzed [for other purposes].

Should individuals on a network be concerned that a middlebox could access private information, or passwords, for example?

Ververis: Usually you should not be worried when you’re visiting websites, especially websites that use some kind of encryption or secure layer [like HTTPS, which prevents others from reading or intercepting information exchanged between a reader and the websites that they visit]. We all know that you shouldn’t connect to open WiFi, [but instead] use a VPN or Tor [on untrusted networks], and [log in to accounts with] two-factor authentication.

But it’s difficult to protect against a strong adversary. Let’s say you’re a journalist on a network that you don’t trust. The network can gain a lot of information from your connectivity, and middleboxes can [be used to facilitate a cyberattack].

How did you detect that these middleboxes were being used to block websites?

Ververis: We use open data from the Open Observatory of Network Interference, which collects network measurements from volunteers all over the world. When you’re sending and receiving a request from a web server you get back some metadata, and we were able to find the specific Huawei tag added to these responses. That might reveal the device, the model, sometimes the version. The middlebox we found had already been found in 2017 OONI research on Cuba.

It’s only possible to do this research if the data is provided openly, the way OONI does. Other entities like Cloudflare and Google, or the transparency reports from social media companies, don’t help researchers and journalists find out what’s going on.

You found 18 countries blocking content with middleboxes, up from seven in an earlier study you did in 2019. What does that suggest?

Ververis: We have more data from OONI now than before, but censorship has [also] been increasing. It’s actually quite surprising that [so many countries] use the same device, so there may be more to unpack there – whether it’s cheap, or easy to deploy, we don’t know.

Is Huawei providing maintenance on these devices or facilitating how they are used?

Ververis: In general, infrastructure [used by internet service providers] should be maintained by the vendor. You usually pay for a license to keep using it [for a specified period].

Weber: The devices report back to the vendor, sending error notices and other information, so the manufacturer might be incentivized to act on that, for example to provide software updates. We also expect that Huawei is likely to provide keyword lists or broad categories for blocking to the customers.

Your report found websites in the news and media category were among those most subject to blocking – what do you take that to mean?

Ververis: News and political advocacy were among the higher categories, though in some countries we have much more data than in others. There are [also] other [blocking] methodologies. In Cuba, they still use the Huawei middlebox, but they’re also deploying something else. Either it doesn’t have a tag or it’s the same equipment that’s been changed, or, most probably, other devices.

The research is not conclusive, but our goal was to raise awareness. If one vendor and one device can do so much damage, what happens with the other dozens or even hundreds that are also out there?

Weber: We uncovered the tip of the iceberg. If there has been some political censorship in a country, even if it’s just a few websites, we can expect there to be more.

Would you argue Huawei is more likely to facilitate censorship because of its origins in China, one of the most censored countries in the world?

Weber: Like all other companies, Huawei is profit driven, which means they will sell anywhere they can make money. We’ve seen that Blue Coat Systems, a company based in the U.S., was selling to regimes that were questionable. There are very few international regulations that would inhibit any of these companies [from] selling wherever there is an opportunity.

[Editor’s note: Researchers at the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab have reported products sold by Blue Coat Systems being used to censor and surveil internet traffic around the world in the past,  including in Syria in 2011, despite a U.S. trade embargo. The company – which has since been acquired and restructured, according to Forbes – told the Wall Street Journal that the technology had been transferred without its knowledge.]

What is a company’s responsibility if it supplies a middlebox to a customer that uses it to censor news under local law?

Weber: There are best practices to engage customers abroad and do risk assessments. I haven’t seen much evidence that Huawei does this.

If you’re a manufacturer selling to law enforcement or government entities, you have to assess their human rights record. It’s too easy to say, “We don’t know how it’s going to be used.” We were able to find questionable use of the technology, a multi-million or multi-billion-dollar company should be able to as well.

Web Design For Professional ECommerce Website: 4 Tips

They say you don’t exist unless you’re online.

Retailers should interpret this as: Without an e-commerce website, the store is off the radar for many customers. Your fresh e-commerce website design is perfect and optimized for your customer conversions. That’s, so an increasing number of retailers are consistently exceeding their annual e-commerce goals.

Tips To Build An Ecommerce Web Design

ECommerce Website

Here are some e-commerce web design tips to help you take your store to the next level.

👉 Mobile responsive.

When 46{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of consumers complete the entire purchasing process on their smartphones, they miss a lot of sales if the website isn’t mobile-friendly. Responsive e-commerce platforms enable visitors from all types of devices to achieve an equally great on-site experience without design constraints.

👉 Customization options.

“Beauty” is a very subjective assessment. But when it comes to web design, “look good” usually means having a comfortable layout, aesthetically pleasing typography and iconography, crisp graphics, and other on-site design elements that make your business stand out. If your e-commerce platform doesn’t have customization features and beautiful off-the-shelf templates, you’ll have to use the same shape as hundreds of other stores, and there’s little room to show how your brand differs from other stores.

👉 Easy-to-understand site navigation.

Navigation is a collective term for all UI elements that give users access to specific information on a website. This includes header navigation menus, filters, onsite searches, product category pages, and footers. If your e-commerce platform limits the ability to create custom navigation paths, you’ll end up with a neat, dysfunctional website that most customers don’t want to use, resulting in poor conversion rates.

👉 Unique user experience.

Delight encourages consumers to continue shopping after completing their purchases. What burns that joy and takes the brand to the next level? If your website is fed up with it, the best marketing tools in the world won’t help.

Compassionate User Experience (UX). The UX plays a central role in ensuring that your website is not only functional, but also reliable, intuitive, user-friendly, and easy to navigate. These factors enhance the joy of interacting with him and make other good things happen.

Consider improving conversion rates, repeated purchases, and acclaimed reviews. So, you don’t want to scoop this up.

How do you know if your e-commerce platform is UX-friendly?

Evaluate basic UI components. Search your website to understand if you like navigation if your layout is effective and if all your design elements are intuitive and aesthetically pleasing.

Examine the customization options. The more elements you can tweak, the more unique UX you can create depending on the size of your business. Keep in mind that what looks like a good “starter” practice for small businesses can be a waste of money for large businesses. Make sure you can add and subtract different design elements as you change your priorities.

Measures the performance of your website. Adds or subtracts page load time and overall website speed from UX. Slow pages, flawed design elements, and slow product video loading are often due to poor CMS / CDNs and hosting providers used in e-commerce platforms.

Trust No One: New Technology Platforms Expand the Attack Surface

Next year, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile all plan to shut down their 3G networks, even as 5G rollouts continue around the country and around the world. And 5G isn’t just about making movie downloads and video calls faster for end consumers – it has the potential to enable entirely new classes of applications, including self-driving cars.

“The introduction of 5G into the IoT ecosystem will dramatically increase the overall surface area for attack,” said Dan Petro, lead researcher at Bishop Fox, a security testing firm.

The complexity of the overall surface area will also increase, he added.

“When no longer resource-constrained to being simple, devices will expand in complexity indefinitely,” he told Data Center Knowledge. “This is generally a recipe for security problems.”

Meanwhile, work-from-home is rapidly turning into the new normal, cloud adoption is accelerating, and APIs are proliferating.

Cyber attackers are embracing the opportunities

The expanded attack surface provides unbounded opportunities for attackers to create havoc.

Employees working from home, for example, are more vulnerable to attacks than if they were in offices, behind corporate firewalls.

And, according to a report released earlier this month by PhishLabs, phishing volume is up nearly 32{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} year-over-year, with over 8{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of corporate emails being reported as potentially malicious.

And attackers are getting more creative. Vishing attacks – using phone calls and voice messages – have more than doubled for the second consecutive quarter. Organizations are also reporting an increase of 82{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} in social media attacks since the start of the year.

Over the past 12 months, 92{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of executives said that their companies experienced a cyber attack, according to a Forrester survey released earlier this fall – and 67{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} said that these attacks targeted remote workers.

In fact, 80{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of security and business leaders said that enabling a remote workforce increased their security risks.

Meanwhile, as applications continue to become more distributed, attackers are also going after corporate APIs, usually using automation.

According to a global survey of more than 28,000 developers released last month by API platform vendor Postman, the number of APIs requests grew by 56{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} over the past year and 56{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of organizations said that they plan to increase their investment in APIs over the next 12 months, while 38{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} said they’ll keep investment level, and only 7{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} said they’ll reduce it.

Since APIs are designed to connect machines with machines, and are often exposed to the Internet, they are prime targets for automated malicious attacks.

In a report released late last month by Atomik Research and cyber security firm Kasada, 80{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of companies said that bots were becoming more sophisticated and difficult for their security tools to detect and 85{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} reported their bot mitigation solution became ineffective within a year after initial deployment.

“We’ve seen that APIs present a tempting attack surface, and there have been a number of high profile breaches and reported vulnerabilities due to insufficiently protected APIs,” said Sandy Carielli, principal analyst at Forrester Research.

According to Salt Security, API attacks increased 348{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} in the first six months of this year, and 94{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of companies had an API-related security incident in the past 12 months.

Gartner recently predicted that API attacks will become the most-frequent attack vector by 2022.

Compromised APIs played a role in the SolarWinds attack last year, and companies including Facebook, Venmo, the US Postal Service, Equifax, Instagram, Amazon, PayPal and T-Mobile have all experienced API-related breaches.

Carielli recommended that data center cyber security managers refer to the OWASP Top 10 API to understand the possible issues and work with application owners and security teams to ensure that the right controls are in place.

“It’s not simply a matter of configuring your web application firewall,” she said.

The application attack surface is also expanding dramatically.

Containers, micro-services, cloud functions – these technologies allow applications to be broken up into larger numbers of smaller pieces. As development cycles shorten, they change faster than ever before. In addition, the container model allows for the rapid scaling of applications.

“Containers often have very short lifespans – many are deployed for no more than a few minutes,” Carielli said.

Hence, traditional security management approaches no longer work. She recommended that data center cyber security managers add container security monitoring tools to look for issues like permission changes and unexpected traffic flows.

A perfect storm

This past year and a half has been a “perfect storm” for cyber security, according to the Ernst & Young Global Information Security Survey released this summer.

More than three-quarters (77{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca}) of companies said that they have seen an increase in the number of disruptive attacks over the last 12 months, up from 59{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} the year before, while 81{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} said that COVID-19 forced organizations to bypass cyber security processes.

As a result, just 9{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of boards were extremely confident that the cyber security risks and mitigation measures presented to them could protect the organization from major cyber attacks – down from 20{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} last year.

As the scale, complexity, and severity of cyber attacks keep escalating – and nation states continue to offer safe havens for attackers – security managers will need to step up their game dramatically to keep up.

The top recommendation from security experts? Shift away from a perimeter-based security approach to a zero-trust strategy.

In May, US President Biden signed an executive order instructing the federal government to adopt zero trust and to require zero trust from external cloud service providers.

In a survey released by Microsoft in July, 96{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of security decision-makers said that zero trust was critical to their organization’s success and 76{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} said that they were in the process of implementing it.

Zero trust addresses many of the issues created by the expanding attack surface. The approach can help secure devices, applications, communications, and remote users.

In an Osterman Research survey released last week, more than 90 percent of IT and security decision makers reported that their organization plans to deploy a zero trust architecture within multiple business units – or even enterprise-wide.

The respondents expect that the efficacy of their cyber security protections will double as a result.

5 SEO Tips & Tricks to Optimize Your WordPress Website

Building a business from the ground up can be difficult. There are many expenses to pay for and obstacles to overcome if you want to become successful.

One of the first steps you can take is optimizing your website so that you receive more virtual traffic. If you want to improve your websites’ visibility, read on to learn about SEO tips and tricks that you can implement.

Why Is SEO So Important?

SEO (or search engine optimization) works by ranking your website higher when someone types a query into Google or another engine. Ideally, you want your website to appear on the first page of results when someone searches for the products or services that you offer. It can take a lot of effort to improve your SEO, but the result is worth it when you receive more visitors to your website.

Visitors tend to lean towards websites that rank high in SEO because it demonstrates their trustworthiness. It also shows that the website’s owner has placed high importance on good virtual security, enhanced user experience, and providing accurate information.

SEO Tips and Tricks

1.     Avoid Plagiarism

Not only is plagiarism an unethical crime, but it can also negatively affect your SEO ranking. If you are hiring someone to write blog posts or create content for your website, you should put it through a plagiarism checking tool before posting it. You can often tell when someone’s work is not their own because it will sound stiff and scripted when you read it out loud, as though they did not understand what they were writing about.

When Google detects repeated content, this will confuse its algorithms. It will not know which piece of content is the most helpful to the viewer. Google will rank the original source of the content first, and the newest may not have a place in the search queries at all.

2.     Implement Keywords

It can be difficult to guess exactly what search criteria people are typing into Google and how it might lead them to your website. Luckily, there are many keyword research tools that you can take advantage of. These tools will show you how popular certain words or phrases are and how you can incorporate them into your site.

For instance, if you have a website that focuses on alternative dating, you need to find out which topics people are searching for at a high monthly frequency. Once you see the topics that interest views, you should branch out to develop keywords. For the topic of alternative dating, your keywords might relate to financially successful men or sugar daddy relationships.

3.     Choose a Good Hosting Provider

It can be easy to forget the amount of influence that your web hosting provider can have on your website. If you have a poor provider, your website visitors will experience longer loading times, more website disruption, and issues with virtual security. Do not cheap out on a hosting provider, as it can be one of the deciding factors relating to the success of your website.

When you look for a provider, there are a few criteria that you should keep in mind, with the first being uptime. Uptime is the amount of time that your website is operational. It is impossible to achieve an uptime of 100{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca}, so you should avoid any providers that promise this. The industry standard is 99.90{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} uptime, so you should find a provider that offers this at a minimum.

You should also find a provider that focuses on high speeds, as this is a direct correlation to achieving a higher SEO ranking.

4.     Utilize Tags and Categories

If you have a broad variety of content, you should use tags and categories to keep it organized. This is especially helpful if you include a blog with different topics. If you write a blog post about popular Italian restaurants in the Cleveland area, your category could be food, and the tags might be Cleveland, restaurants, or Italian.

By using these categories and tags, you are helping your website visitors navigate easier. This also improves your SEO ranking because it allows Google to analyze the structure of your website.

5.     Choose an Optimized Theme

One of the easiest ways to improve SEO is by choosing a theme that is the best for SEO. If you have already created your website, you are still able to change the theme if you wish. Many different criteria determine how optimized a theme is.

One factor that affects optimization is responsiveness. A good WordPress theme will adjust to the size of the electronic device that is accessing it. This is important for users on mobile devices who want to view the website while on the go. They will not want to deal with an un-optimized website, and they would rather use a competitor’s site instead.

Another way to optimize is by choosing a theme that receives regular updates. This is because you want to take advantage of all the latest patches and security upgrades. If your theme becomes outdated and is no longer usable on certain browsers, you could lose a large portion of your customers without even realizing it.

6G technology launch likely by 2023-end or 2024, says Ashwini Vaishnaw

India is working towards an indigenously developed 6G technology with the aim to launch it either by 2023-end or early 2024, Minister for Communication Ashwini Vaishnaw said Tuesday.

Speaking on ‘New Technology and the Green Economy: Two Trends Shaping a New India?’, the fourth in a series of online, agenda-setting webinars organised by the Financial Times and The Indian Express, Vaishnaw said requisite permissions have already been given to scientists and engineers working on the technology.

“6G development has already started. That will be seen somewhere in the time frame 2024 or 2023-end. That is the direction in which we are going. We will have designed in India telecom software for running the networks, manufactured in India telecom equipment, served in India telecom networks which can go global,” he said.

Apart from 6G, the launch of indigenous 5G is also on the cards, the minister said, with the development of a core software for the technology to be completed by the third quarter of next year. The auctions for 5G spectrum is also likely to happen in the second quarter of calendar year 2022, he said.

“A reference has been made to TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) for 5G spectrum auctions. They have already started the consultation process. The process should end somewhere in the February-March time frame in the coming year. Then the auction process will be in Q2 of calendar year 2022,” he said.

Earlier this year, the Cabinet had approved a set of nine structural and procedural reforms to address the short-term liquidity needs as well as long-term issues of telecom companies.

As part of these reforms, the government had given the telcos an option to go for a four-year moratorium on payment of deferred spectrum and adjusted gross revenue dues. Of the three telcos, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have opted for the four-year moratorium.

While announcing the reforms in September, Vaishnaw had said that there would be another set of reforms for the telecom sector to sort out long pending legacy issues.

“The reforms that the government approved in September have been very well received. The industry is now adjusting to those reforms. A lot of stress that was there in the industry is now mitigated due to those reforms. Much more needs to be done. We are already working on another set of reforms which should come in 3-4 months,” he said.

As part of the reforms announced in September, apart from the 4-year moratorium, the government had also announced changes such as streamlining of the auction calendar and removal of the spectrum usage charges (SUC) from auctions, which had been a long pending demand of the private telcos.

The telecom sector will also be able to receive 100 per cent foreign direct investment through the automatic route, up from the 49 per cent permitted earlier.

Further, for all future auctions, the DoT will not ask for bank guarantees to secure instalment payments while the tenure for which spectrum can be held has been increased to 30 years from 20 years, with the option of allowing the telecom service provider to surrender the spectrum after 10 years following payment of a certain fee. An additional SUC of 0.5 per cent, which was levied on spectrum sharing, has also been done away with.
