How To Measure The Largest Contentful Paint Of Your Website

Run a free website speed test to find out. Your LCP speed will be displayed immediately.

The results of your speed test will tell you if:

  • The LCP threshold is met.
  • You need to optimize any other Core Web Vital.

How Is The Largest Contentful Paint Calculated?

Google looks at the 75th percentile of experiences – that means 25{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of real website visitors experience LCP load times of 3.09 seconds or higher, while for 75{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of users the LCP is below 3.09 seconds.

In this example, the real-user LCP is shown as 3.09 seconds.

What Are The Lab Test Results On My Core Web Vitals Data?

With this specific web speed test, you’ll also see lab metrics that were collected in a controlled test environment. While these metrics don’t directly impact Google rankings, there are two advantages of this data:

  1. The metrics update as soon as you improve your website, while Google’s real-time data will take 28 days to fully update.
  2. You get detailed reports in addition to the metrics, which can help you optimize your website.

Additionally, PageSpeed Insights also provides lab data, but keep in mind that the data it reports can sometimes be misleading due to the simulated throttling it uses to emulate a slower network connection.

How Do You Find Your Largest Contentful Paint Element?

When you run a page speed test with DebugBear, the LCP element is highlighted in the test result.

Sometimes, the LCP element may be a large image, and other times, it could be a large portion of text.

Regardless of whether your LCP element is an image or a piece of text, the LCP content won’t appear until your page starts rendering.

For example, on the page below, a background image is responsible for the largest paint.

In contrast, this page’s LCP is a paragraph of text.

How To Optimize The Largest Contentful Paint & Rank Higher In GoogleScreenshot of DebugBear.com, November 2022

To improve the Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) of your website you need to ensure that the HTML element responsible for the LCP appears quickly.

How To Improve The Largest Contentful Paint

To improve the LCP you need to:

  1. Find out what resources are necessary to make the LCP element appear.
  2. See how you can load those resources faster (or not at all).

For example, if the LCP element is a photo, you could reduce the file size of the image.

After running a DebugBear speed test, you can click on each performance metric to view more information on how it could be optimized.

How To Optimize The Largest Contentful Paint & Rank Higher In GoogleScreenshot of a detailed Largest Contentful Paint analysis in DebugBear.com, November 2022

Common resources that affect the LCP are:

  • Render-blocking resources.
  • Images that are not optimized.
  • Outdated image formats.
  • Fonts that are not optimized.

How To Reduce Render-Blocking Resources

Render-blocking resources are files that need to be downloaded before the browser can start drawing page content on the screen. CSS stylesheets are typically render-blocking, as are many script tags.

To reduce the performance impact of render-blocking resources you can:

  1. Identify what resources are render-blocking.
  2. Review if the resource is necessary.
  3. Review if the resource needs to block rendering.
  4. See if the resource can be loaded more quickly up, for example using compression.

The Easy Way: In the DebugBear request waterfall, requests for render-blocking resources are marked with a “Blocking” tag.

How To Prioritize & Speed Up LCP Image Requests

For this section, we’re going to leverage the new “fetchpriority” attribute on images to help your visitor’s browsers quickly identify what image should load first.

Use this attribute on your LCP element.

Why?

When just looking at the HTML, browsers often can’t immediately tell what images are important. One image might end up being a large background image, while another one might be a small part of the website footer.

Accordingly, all images are initially considered low priority, until the page has been rendered and the browser knows where the image appears.

However, that can mean that the browser only starts downloading the LCP image fairly late.

The new Priority Hints web standard allows website owners to provide more information to help browsers prioritize images and other resources.

In the example below, we can see that the browser spends a lot of time waiting, as indicated by the gray bar.

We would choose this LCP image to add the “fetchpriority” attribute to.

How To Add The “FetchPriority” Attribute To Images

Simply adding the fetchpriority=”high” attribute to an HTML img tag will the browser will prioritize downloading that image as quickly as possible.

<img src="https://www.searchenginejournal.com/optimize-largest-contentful-paint-debugbear-spcs/471883/photo.jpg" fetchpriority="high" />

How To Use Modern Image Formats & Size Images Appropriately

High-resolution images can often have a large file size, which means they take a long time to download.

In the speed test result below you can see that by looking at the dark blue shaded areas. Each line indicates a chunk of the image arriving in the browser.

How To Optimize The Largest Contentful Paint &#038; Rank Higher In GoogleScreenshot of a large LCP image on DebugBear.com, November 2022

There are two approaches to reducing image sizes:

  1. Ensure the image resolution is as low as possible. Consider serving images at different resolutions depending on the size of the user’s device.
  2. Use a modern image format like WebP, which can store images of the same quality at a lower file size.

How To Optimize Font Loading Times

If the LCP element is an HTML heading or paragraph, then it’s important to load the font for this chunk of text quickly.

One way to achieve this would be to use preload tags that can tell the browser to load the fonts early.

The font-display: swap CSS rule can also ensure sped-up rendering, as the browser will immediately render the text with a default font before switching to the web font later on.

CTIM: Testing Future Technology To Extend One Of The “Most Important” Earth Science Measurements

CTIM: Testing Future Technology To Extend One Of The “Most Important” Earth Science Measurements

miniature satellite about the dimensions of a shoebox

Given that July 2022, a miniature satellite about the dimensions of a shoebox has been orbiting Earth and monitoring how significantly photo voltaic electricity reaches the ambiance.

Now, experts are finalizing their assessment of the very first five months of measurements it collected though in orbit.

The Sun is by far the premier resource of energy to Earth, dwarfing the vitality generated by Earth’s main, and it plays a big job in international local climate. Specific and exact measurement of how much photo voltaic energy is absorbed by Earth— Full Photo voltaic Irradiance (TSI)—is essential to our knowledge of Earth’s local climate process.

The CubeSat, referred to as the Compact Total Irradiance Keep an eye on-Flight Demonstration, or CTIM-FD, is on a one-12 months mission to develop and take a look at new systems for measuring TSI.

CTIM-FD was designed and crafted by the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the College of Colorado Boulder and the National Institute of Benchmarks and Technological know-how (NIST).

A crucial aspect of this mission is to directly review the measurements of CTIM towards its bigger counterparts to demonstrate that it can perform measurements just as specifically and precisely.

“The CTIM mission performs a critical role in the long run of photo voltaic irradiance measurements. The CubeSat system enables us to go from the 1st idea to on-orbit demonstration much a lot quicker than classic place know-how, letting us to speedy display its viability as nicely as learn how we’d improve the instrument design for potential missions,” reported David Harber, principal investigator (PI) of the CTIM-FD mission and instrument engineer at LASP.

Isolating just how substantially strength is coming from the Sun allows climate experts tease aside the a variety of organic and human parts of Earth’s power spending plan. In the most current Earth Science Decadal Survey, TSI, which is calculated in watts per square meter, was selected one of the “Most Important” measurements for Earth experts to make.

Extending a essential 40-year local climate report

Considering the fact that 1978, experts have utilised a assortment of house-dependent devices to measure TSI. CTIM is a lesser, lighter model of before LASP-developed Whole Irradiance Monitors (TIMs) that flew on several missions. These include things like: the Photo voltaic Radiation and Local weather Experiment (SORCE) which lasted from 2003 to 2020 the Overall Solar Irradiance Calibration Transfer Experiment, which operated from 2013 to 2019 and the Whole and Spectral Photo voltaic Irradiance Sensor 1 (TSIS-1), which has been on the Worldwide Area Station since 2017.

These and other instruments have taken care of a ongoing report of whole photo voltaic irradiance for extra than 40 many years, offering local weather researchers with an invaluable facts established. LASP has supplied this measurement for the final 20 many years. Retaining this unbroken document of TSI facts is significant for planning potential generations of scientists to fully grasp and mitigate the consequences of local weather improve.

Lesser, lighter, more affordable

But these bigger, heavier devices are far more pricey to make and start. CTIM was produced smaller sized and lighter employing a number of improvements. Foremost were the new silicon bolometers created jointly with the NIST Boulder Resources and Detectors group led by John Lehman and fabricated at NIST by Nathan Tomlin.

The silicon detectors take in optical light-weight applying carbon nanotubes. The nanotubes had been grown vertically, forming a quite darkish area that absorbs sunlight and heats up. The detector also has a thermistor built of a product whose resistance is dependent upon its temperature, which presents a quite exact evaluate of radiant heat.

“The coronary heart of the instrument is the detector, and so shrinking the detectors is the important move in shrinking the instrument,” Harber said. “Traditional detectors use more substantial cavities to soak up mild but carbon nanotubes permit us to take up as much as a cavity with a flat area.”

CTIM was released on a Virgin Orbit Launcher One rocket as a journey-share on the U.S. Space Force’s STP-Sat 28A mission and was funded as a result of the Spend system in NASA’s Earth Science Technological innovation Place of work. LASP’s CubeSat mission functions and knowledge methods groups are furnishing the commanding, downlink, facts capture, and knowledge assessment for CTIM-FD functions through floor stations at LASP in Boulder.

The CTIM on-orbit measurements will be presented in January 2023 at the American Meteorological Society’s yearly conference in Denver.

LASP is a investigate institute at the University of Colorado Boulder that is on a mission to remodel human understanding of the cosmos by revolutionary new technologies and techniques to area science. Founded a decade ahead of NASA, LASP is the only tutorial investigation institute in the earth to have sent devices to each and every earth in our solar technique.

Fluidra builds a new model for website design

Due to the fact its founding in 1969, Fluidra has steadily developed into a multinational enterprise and worldwide leader in the pool and wellness market. As of now, the enterprise has 7,000 employees working in 45 international locations, a structure that produced an annual income of 2.2 billion euros in 2021. As a result of this expansion and achievements, the corporation has come to confront new worries as it has grown across borders. This meant a chance of diverging processes and units, including its web page and the electronic buyer journey it made available.

As element of its mission to deliver the excellent marketplace encounter, Fluidra designed the final decision to acquire a widespread internet site architecture that it would use in each individual market. This would contain a renewal of the manufacturer to deliver end users with simplified navigation options and a additional beautiful interface.

To complete this, Fluidra preferred to recognize a partner that could function with its very own complex e-organization workforce to put into action Adobe Encounter Supervisor (AEM) into the company’s current Amazon Internet Services (AWS) infrastructure. Following a competitive RFP procedure that allowed the business enterprise to critique a range of likely choices, Fluidra selected Capgemini, which could convey a sizeable sum of realistic know-how to bear as evidenced by its comprehensive historical past of effective web site redesigns and knowledge with the two Adobe and AWS know-how.

Setting up a digital skeleton

The partners kicked off the collaboration by agreeing on the needs and issues related to the project.

“Our problem in IT was to present a new system where by all the business web-sites could reside,” points out David Bultà, IT Method, Innovation & Seller Operations Supervisor at Fluidra. “The second crucial purpose was to allow our enterprise colleagues to style and design and publish sites in a quick and agile way by reusing templates and elements.”

With the job outline firmly established, Fluidra and Capgemini started to acquire the preliminary objects, parts, and connectors that would engage in a essential role in facilitating a upcoming rebuild of the business’ most important brand name web pages. This fashioned a common framework on which those people websites could be constructed when enabling certain makes to keep their exceptional identities.

“First, we developed and aligned on a prevalent style and design with all the stakeholders of the various brands,” describes Esther Fernández Bejar, CX Project Director at Capgemini. “Then, we set up a most effective-in-class infrastructure to host the digital platform. And past, we created the journeys with a part-centric technique so that Fluidra’s company could acquire autonomy.”

Future technology for future sailors? >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

by Craig Leweck, Scuttlebutt Sailing News
I am all for heightening awareness of our influence on the environment. We simply cannot continue to keep throwing points away as there is no put identified as Absent. But I also have little tolerance for the phony promotion of sustainable products and solutions and packaging

There is a change in between a thing becoming recyclable and no matter if it is remaining recycled. The plastics business certain us of how they are not the bogeyman, nonetheless most plastic that promises to be recyclable goes to squander.

For the maritime business, this is an energetic topic. The superior quantity of recreational fiberglass boats, mostly as a result of the boat creating growth beginning in the 1970s, are achieving the end of their provider life. Dragging them to landfills doesn’t make our activity seem much too eco-friendly.

So boat builders are discovering how to make recyclable boats, and they are finding there, but does a recyclable boat get recycled? I really do not imply to throw drinking water on what looks to be a terrific initiative, but I also don’t want to be fooled by bogus progress.

When I obtained details about the ecoOptimist, in which they report to have created the environment-very first recyclable Optimist, I questioned how this boat is to be recycled. I never obtained an solution, but I motivate these questions to be asked. I am hopeful for real remedies, and probably this is 1 of them as they are on a mission to impact the long term of our world sailing group.

Soon after launching their recyclable Optimist in Summer months 2022, Northern Mild Composites and not-for-financial gain Clean Sailors have opened a opposition to give sailing clubs around the entire world the opportunity to own just one of the 1st ecoOptimists at any time made. The project’s concentration is to get youthful sailors to imagine in another way about the output of boats.

In accordance to ecoOptimist, their boat is constructed from sustainable supplies and also recyclable with extra than 90{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of the hull recyclable currently with a purpose for it to quickly be 100{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca}. This has been accomplished with Swiss clear-tech corporation, Bcomp’s technological innovation which provided ampliTex purely natural fiber reinforcements, Atlas HPE main, and resin which they declare can be reused to deliver new components.

When compared to conventional glass fibers, the assertion is how flax fibers minimize the CO2 footprint of the composite in manufacturing and never rely on fossil assets for the production of the raw product. Alternatively, they apparently sequester CO2 from the atmosphere in the course of their expansion and act as a natural CO2 sink throughout their total life time.

Every ecoOptimist also capabilities a sail by OneSails which makes use of their ISO licensed sustainable and recyclable sail material.

Indigenous entrepreneurs are using drones and aerospace tech to decolonize the sky

Unreserved45:26Decolonizing the sky

Numerous remote Indigenous communities in Canada have been relying on the aerospace market for almost everything from transportation of products, mail and health-related provides for a long time.

Evolving technological innovation like the use of drones is generating possibilities for Indigenous communities to turn out to be extra self-reliant by making use of the sky as a highway.

“It is truly a decolonial effort and hard work where it returns the electrical power into our fingers so that we can once more assert our possess self-resolve, figure out how it unfolds in just our area,” mentioned Jacob Taylor.

Taylor is a member of Curve Lake Very first Country, about 150 kilometres northeast of Toronto, and is the founder and CEO of Indigenous Aerospace.

His eyesight is to assistance Indigenous communities consider control of the transportation of items and medications through the use of drones.

Aiding Initial Nations assistance them selves

Taylor’s journey into the industry commenced while in Moose Factory, Ont., doing the job on training programming for remote communities.

He stated he uncovered a good deal about the logistical difficulties of remote Initial Nations communities in Northern Ontario that are mostly obtainable by aircraft.

In 2016, an report by the late CBC journalist Jody Porter about a lady who died at a Webequie First Nation immediately after the oxygen ran out at the community’s nursing station, spurred him into action.

“The nearest oxygen tank was 70 kilometers absent, straight as the crow flies,” claimed Taylor. Considering the fact that it was nighttime when the tank ran out helicopters couldn’t fly — but a drone could have.

“Distant piloted plane systems grew to become a intriguing idea to address some of the crucial treatment logistics in the region.”

This started Taylor’s efforts striving to resolve how to deliver a regular inflow of critical provides to a group in desperate need of these providers. But he was also intrigued in getting a way to assistance communities aid them selves.

The drone market was, and continue to is, an rising a single. And Taylor reported he did not want to see Indigenous communities skip the opportunity to arise as sector leaders.

In July 2021, Indigenous Aerospace launched with the intention of helping To start with Nations communities create drone applications by giving education and employment.

“I profit from providing this and the local community gains from offering this — and in tandem, alongside one another, we can achieve bigger factors than anybody could do in isolation,” Taylor explained.

“There have been no treaties signed for the sky, so Indigenous people today have an inherent appropriate to take part in the aerospace sector.”

He mentioned that the drones have currently established valuable in some communities he is labored with they are working with the technology for search and rescue missions.

“This variety of get the job done getting done by area people today is fairly heroic, and so you will find a serious pleasure to it,” Taylor explained.

“There is no panacea, cookie-cutter answers that definitely work in [all] our communities — we have to obtain the suitable fit for the correct position and the very best people today to do that are the persons that originate from there.”

Uniting coastal communities

Alongside the east coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, a smaller airline is making a big difference for isolated Inuit communities.

Air Borealis presents very important transportation of travellers and cargo to communities in Nunatsiavut that are accessible only by air, h2o or ice in the wintertime. The airline also created historical past not too long ago with the flight of an all-feminine Inuit crew.

She can take good pleasure in staying equipped to enable serve and join communities throughout her standard territory.

The airline fleet is built up of Twin Otter planes, which have nineteen seats. The small aircrafts bring the travellers and the pilots together, incorporating a quite private contact.

Michelin said possessing Inuit flight crews helps make a large change for the travellers.

“There are usually opinions from folks telling us how very pleased and impressed they are to see woman Inuk pilots running in just our lands,”  she said. “Hearing that we are job models for youthful Indigenous little ones is actually inspiring.”

Aviation with an Indigenous worldview

Teara Fraser is a very pleased Métis woman and a chief in the aviation industry in Canada.

She went from becoming a pilot, to making an aerial images company, to launching her very own airline named Iskwew Air based out of Vancouver Global Airport.

Iskwew indicates woman in Cree. Fraser stated deciding on that as the identify for her airline was a deliberate act of reclaiming language and matriarchy in an market that is male dominated with an underrepresentation of Indigenous people.

She thinks that an Indigenous worldview will revolutionize the aviation market by helping tutorial the way to a a lot more sustainable future and more healthy connection with the earth, the sky and every other.

“When I feel about decolonizing, I imagine about how we are dismantling the techniques that are no more time functioning,” Fraser explained.

An Indigenous worldview centres the human responsibility to all our relations, from every single other to the land, the sky and the drinking water.

“I believe about us recreating techniques that are human centred and I consider about Indigenous peoples main in this revolutionary room.”

Fraser’s vision for the future of aviation also sees Indigenous females especially at the helm of management.

“It indicates honouring matriarchal management and the exclusive means that females guide, with emphasis on care and local community.”
