Google’s Search Advocate John Mueller – in a rare case of annoyance – said that any SEO advice mentioning “link juice” is not to be trusted. Is it or not?
I wondered about the context and doubted whether it was true. There are different opinions.
After Barry Schwartz shared the news on LinkedIn, a lively debate ensued. Even Moz and SparkToro founder Rand Fishkin chimed in on the comments saying, “Maybe link juice is real after all. Maybe y’all should write more about it!”
On link juice and bad SEO advice
When he dismissed link juice, Mueller was answering a question about outgoing links. He essentially ignored the original question and solely responded to the undesirable “link juice” mention.
While Mueller is usually neutral in his tone this time he came close to a rant on Twitter:
“Anything that talks about ‘link juice’ should be ignored.”
This is nothing new. He’s just reiterating what he expressed in the past more than once.
“I’d forget everything you read about ‘link juice.’ It’s very likely all obsolete, wrong, and/or misleading.”
So is link juice such a detestable term? Is it akin to the “snake oil” fringe SEO practitioners are still offering? Let’s take a look at the bigger picture.
Snake oil: A popular type of panacea in SEO
There’s a reason why the SEO industry had a bad rep for many years. Metaphorical snake oil has been sold in various ways and many websites have been harmed by misguided SEO advice or tactics.
The proverbial “snake oil” – a synonym for misleading promises of miraculous cures to all kinds of diseases – has often been likened to SEO.
Even in 2022, we see many more #seohorrorstories passed on Twitter and other social media than inspiring success stories. SEO experts themselves, not just outsiders, rather focus on those negative news.
Of course, the SEO industry is not the only one guilty of selling snake oil or spreading the word about it.
I had many clients asking me for unethical SEO practices over the years. To this day, you have to be very firm in your ethics in order not to get caught up in a downward spiral of shady SEO techniques. I also get requests for paid links and other similar offers regularly by mail.
The history of link juice
When Google started out in the crowded and messy search engine market, it had a revolutionary ranking algorithm that used the so-called “PageRank” to determine website authority. It was named after Google co-founder Larry Page, not (just) the actual “web page.”
SEO specialists started to use many different slang terms for PageRank – “Google juice” or “link juice” being among the most popular.
In the early years since its inception, Google performed pretty well by PageRank alone and grew its market share continuously.
First-generation search engines like AltaVista, Yahoo and Infoseek were easily gamed by simply using:
Keyword stuffing.
Hidden text.
Misleading meta tags.
Once Google grew big enough to dominate the market, unethical SEO practitioners mainly focused on artificially inflating the number of incoming links (also called backlinks) so that Google would rank them higher.
PageRank became less and less of a guarantee of high-quality search results leading to Google started adding more ranking signals to the algorithm over time.
As link juice became more abused, Google kept on adding more ranking signals, sophisticated technologies like AI and quality concepts like E-A-T.
Get the daily newsletter search marketers rely on.
How does link juice work?
We won’t go too deep into the topic of link juice, as others have done before us. An evergreen guide by WooRank is still worth reading to get a quick overview. Their visualizations are especially self-explanatory.
In theory, the website authority of the site linking out is spread more or less equally to the pages it links to.
But in reality, the process is much more complex and link value depends on many other elements including:
Anchor text (<a href=”https://searchengineland.com/example.com”>I’m the anchor text!</a>): Too many keywords are a red flag, not enough pass less value.
Placement on the page: Footer links count less than content links, for instance.
Context on the site and page: Irrelevant or off-topic context passes less value.
Additional attributes: HTML rel attributes such as rel=”nofollow, UGC, sponsored” devalue links.
The number of links: Link lists with dozens of links may not pass any significant value.
Is content the new link?
By 2019, Google has shifted its messaging to concentrate on quality content. From the outside, the pivot seems to imply that “content is the new link.” Eventually, one of Google’s main SEO documents which largely focused on links was updated to predominantly cover content.
For a long time, Google representatives have been wary of the industry’s emphasis on link building. Instead, they underscore the need for quality content each time the question comes up.
Now, Google tends to overemphasize content in order to make people more aware of it and underrepresent links so SEOs stop obsessing about them.
In Google Search Essentials, the “key best practices” section mentions content six times including on top while links are mentioned only three times:
In my opinion, we have to put both tendencies into perspective and ensure we find the middle ground.
While the colloquial term link juice really sounds a bit sleazy, the concept behind it (Google’s original algorithm) is still valid and used to determine website and page-level authority or value.
It’s a huge oversimplification of the by-now very complex Google algorithm containing numerous checks and balances (as Kaspar Szymanski has summarized) ensuring a proper ranking less prone to manipulation.
At the end of the day, you still have to attract links to your website or else other content of similar quality will outrank you in organic search results. So, while using the term link juice may sound a bit outdated, it’s not yet complete snake oil.
What do the experts say? Fishkin is not the only one to speak about link juice.
Brian Lonsdale, Co-founder of Smarter Digital Marketing Ltd, maintains:
“If Google doesn’t want you to do something it means that it works.”
WhilePierre Zarokian, CEO at Submit Express / Reputation Stars, added:
“I will not fall for that. Google algo has been based on link juice since 1998.”
What terms should be used instead of link juice?
You can say many things to refer to link juice without sounding like a drug dealer in a back alley.
Jessica Levenson, Global Head of Digital Strategy & SEO at NetSuite and Oracle, makes it pretty clear:
“Frankly, no one should use that term. Links and their purpose aside, it’s the worst phrase ever.”
What else can you say instead then? Some of the more professional-sounding terms include:
Link authority
Link value
Link equity
Daniel Foley Carter, Director at Assertive, explains:
“I call it link equity – irrespective of what Google says – anyone who’s been in the SEO industry knows to take things like this with a big pinch of salt.”
If that’s too boring or technocratic for you, you can follow the advice of Brent Payne:
“I use ‘link tequila,’ it’s just a lot more fun. And I love tequila.”
Link equity is not enough
When you use a synonym for “link juice” though, remember that the concept is on the way out and doesn’t work by itself as in the early days.
When I started out in SEO in 2004, it was still common to rank empty websites.
You could even get thin content pages to rank for competitive keywords solely by directing link juice to them. In 2022, that’s a rare exception – if at all possible.
Focus on creating great content to attract great links
As always, the truth is found somewhere in the middle. While Google is de-emphasizing links in their algorithm and public rhetoric, its technology still relies to some extent on links.
It’s still very difficult to get organic search visibility on Google solely by way of content. But once that content gets endorsed by links from authority sites, the probability of gaining visibility on Google’s top positions grows significantly.
So how do we get there without buying paid links or otherwise gaming Google? There is a well-traveled path by now. It has worked for many content SEO practitioners.
Create ‘linkable assets’
For many years, website owners wanted to buy SEO services instead of creating content that could actually earn links. I lost many potential clients when explaining that I can’t artificially inflate the ranking of an empty site that only has self-promotional material as its content.
Linkable assets are any kind of comprehensive, valuable and unique resources that are likely to get recommended by other publishers. In-depth guides, unique survey results, and breaking news are some examples.
Attract links naturally
Once you have published content that is worth getting linked to, you ideally just have to sit and wait until people notice and link to you.
This is, of course, the theory. In practice, you will most likely be overlooked unless you are already having an established audience.
In such instances, you have to at least mention experts in your content who already have an audience. They can help you get the ball rolling.
Reach out to ‘linkaratis’
Influencers, journalists and industry experts are usually very busy and once they are established a social media mention may not be enough to get their attention.
Good old email outreach is your tool of choice then. So-called linkaratis are often open to helpful suggestions that match their interests.
When you choose the right people and focus on a few instead of sending mass mailings to hundreds of strangers, you get some initial traction until others notice you organically.

For the first time, the 2022 World Cup will use tracking technology inside the ball to help make important calls.
TIM NWACHUKWU / GETTY IMAGES
When the 2022 World Cup made its debut on Sunday, it kicked off one of the most significant in-game uses of technology in sports history.
All tournament long, match balls will contain a sensor that collects spatial positioning data in real time — the first World Cup to employ such a ball-tracking mechanism. This, combined with existing optical tracking tools, will make VAR (video assistant referees) and programs like offside reviews more accurate and streamlined than they’ve ever been. Combining these two forms of tracking has long been a holy grail of sorts in technology circles, and FIFA’s use of the ball sensor in particular will serve as a highly public test case over the next four weeks.
Like so many other parts of the burgeoning world of sports tech, the setup used at the World Cup is both an endpoint and the foundation of a whole new era. Years of research and testing were needed to get here — this particular ball sensor was in development and testing for six years before receiving full FIFA certification — but events like this could quickly catapult emerging technology into the public eye through applications that stretch well beyond officiating.
What went into the development of today’s tracking technology, and what are its key uses at this World Cup? How has the tech been tested, and how can players, teams and fans alike be confident that it’s accurate and consistent? And maybe most importantly, what does this same technology portend for the future of analysis, fan engagement and team data across the world’s most popular sport?
I spoke to people across the world of sports tech to find answers around one of the field’s boldest experiments to date.
Which technology is being used, and how does it work?
FIFA’s application of this technology at the 2022 World Cup is being termed a “semi-automated offside” program – one that’s largely run by AI features, but retains a vital element of human confirmation.
Within every match ball is a device designed by KINEXON, a major player in the performance-tracking world across several sports. Per the company, this device weighs 14 grams (just under 0.5 ounces), and actually houses two separate sensors operating simultaneously:
Ultra-wideband (UWB) sensor: A type of technology that’s superior to GPS or Bluetooth for precise positional data, plus can transmit data in real time to constantly track the ball’s position.
Inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensor: A sensor meant to detect nuanced movements of an object in space.
“While the ultra-wideband helps me to have the position of an object, the IMU gives me the granular movement in three dimensions,” said Maximillian Schmidt, co-founder and managing director of KINEXON.
So any time the ball is kicked, headed, thrown or even so much as tapped, the system picks it up at 500 frames per second. Data is sent in real time from sensors to a local positioning system (LPS), which involves a setup of network antennas installed around the playing field that take in and store the data for immediate use. When a ball flies out of bounds during the course of play, and a new ball is thrown or kicked in to replace it, KINEXON’s backend system automatically switches to the new ball’s data input without the need for human intervention.
KINEXON’s in-ball device is supported by suspension technology provided by Adidas, designed to house the sensor at the central interior point of the ball and keep it secure in a consistent location.
Paired with this ball sensor is optical camera tracking from Hawk-Eye, a system well known for its work in tennis. Twelve Hawk-Eye cameras are set up around the stadium, tracking both the ball itself and each player 50 times per second. Twenty-nine separate points of the body are tracked for players, including limbs.
When combined, these two data sources allow for offside decisions that are not just highly accurate, but also available much faster than in the past – a major priority for FIFA in this World Cup cycle.
“We debriefed in 2018 after the World Cup,” Nicolas Evans, head of football research and standards for FIFA Technology Innovation, said. Such a debrief is standard after each World Cup, according to Evans. “The biggest area for improvement we saw was the time it took to make offside decisions.”
With that in mind, data from both KINEXON and Hawk-Eye is run through artificial intelligence software that’s programmed to generate automated offside alerts to officials in the match’s video room. Instead of manually combing through plays, a time-consuming process, AI programs auto-generate alerts that can then be confirmed by video match officials.
The software also generates 3D renderings of the spatial data, which will be overlaid onto TV broadcasts and in-stadium monitors to give fans a direct look at how each reviewed call was decided.
How accurate is this data? How is it tested?
Some readers might have an understandable question at this point: “How do I know this data consistently reflects the true positioning of the players and ball?”
The first concept to understand here is refresh rate, which is measured in Hz and refers to the number of times per second that a given display is able to draw a new image. Standard 50Hz video, a common format used for HD monitors today, is generating a new image 50 times per second (or a “frame rate” of 50 frames per second, for those more familiar with that term). Anyone who has slowed a video down to frame-by-frame mode knows the sensation of slight periods of time passing between each frame – and for 50Hz video, that gap is 20 milliseconds per frame (for 60Hz video, it’s 16.66 milliseconds per frame, and so on).
With KINEXON’s ball-tracking system, that data is coming in at 500Hz, meaning any gaps in true positioning are below two milliseconds long – or 10 times shorter than standard 50Hz lags. Furthermore, the use of a PTP master clock allows synchronization between KINEXON and Hawk-Eye data that’s precise down to one-millionth of a second, per Evans, ensuring the two feeds are never out of whack with one another.
To check each component of the system, FIFA has conducted tests in both controlled and live settings.
For both the KINEXON ball sensors and Hawk-Eye’s optical camera setup, a format known as “ground truth testing” is required by FIFA’s Quality Programme for Electronic Performance Testing Systems (EPTS). The approach utilizes a minimum of 36 high-quality Vicon motion-capture cameras, combined with reflective markers designed for these cameras placed on the ball itself and every player for ultra-accurate detection. As players and the ball move around the testing pitch, both these Vicon cameras and the KINEXON/Hawk-Eye setups run simultaneously – and researchers compare the two outputs to assess the accuracy of the latter systems. This testing is augmented by the use of other tools, such as a laser to detect events like high-speed player sprints.
Another kind of test is also vital here, especially for one of the world’s most-watched sporting events: Ensuring that the addition of a sensor inside the ball is imperceptible to the players kicking it. Since it’s all too easy to envision a scenario in which a prominent player blames the feel of the “different” World Cup ball for a missed penalty or some other on-pitch failure — igniting a worldwide controversy — eliminating such concerns is naturally important.
Adidas is the key entity responsible for this kind of testing, which sources familiar with the program report is done in two ways:
Blind player testing: With the help of clubs in places like Spain, Germany and England, extensive blind testing was carried out to see if players could tell the difference between “normal” balls and balls infused with the sensor/suspension setup without knowing which was which ahead of time.
Mechanical shooter testing: In a lab setting, robotic shooting devices can be programmed to “kick” the ball at varying speeds, spins and directions. High-speed cameras then evaluate the flight of the ball, ensuring that the presence of the sensor does not create abnormal flight paths.
This testing was performed in several professional and grassroots settings, such as the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar and the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi. In addition, Evans said FIFA ran several of its own additional blind tests, including at a team workshop in Qatar earlier in 2022.
“Together with our partner Adidas, large-scale sample blind tests have been carried out where no differences could be observed by players between the connected ball and the regular ball,” Evans said.
These and similar forms of tech also have been getting real-life test runs for years now. An earlier version of KINEXON’s sensor-infused ball was used alongside jersey tracking in 2018 in Germany’s fourth-tier Regionalliga to bring real-time data to a live TV broadcast; a newer setup was used earlier this year during a German academy club match. The Hawk-Eye camera setup, meanwhile, has been utilized in the UEFA Champions League group-stage matches throughout the early part of this season in the lead-up to the World Cup.
Of course, none of this guarantees an incident-free event. Unforeseen circumstances can come up in the world of tech. Equipment can malfunction. Even in the likely scenario that the tech works perfectly from start to finish, good luck convincing crazed sports fans of that if their country’s top player has trashed the tracked ball or suggested the system isn’t accurate.
Such possibilities are all but unavoidable in the end. But the companies involved are confident they’ve met every important threshold to introduce this new level of technology into the world’s most important soccer competition.
“[It’s] probably as good as it’s ever been in this type of technology,” Evans said.
This is the tip of the technological iceberg
The 2022 World Cup is barely scratching the surface of the potential capabilities of this sort of technology – which go well beyond officiating.
Before long, this combination of ball- and optical-tracking could be a familiar tool to everyone involved with the sport — much like Second Spectrum tracking in the NBA or Hawk-Eye in tennis. Teams and players could use the resulting data for next-generation tactical analysis; broadcasts could use it to visualize the game and draw in new viewers. Fans could eventually have access to a vast ocean of new stats that were never possible until now.
In fact, this already has started happening.
Earlier in 2022, KINEXON’s ball sensor was used in a Liga Portugal relegation match, along with sensors in player jerseys to track their movements. More than 300 different metrics were collected in multiple categories, including technical data (shot and pass speed, ball possession time, distinct ball actions), performance data (dribbling speed, accelerations and sprints — both with and without the ball — plus measures of athlete “load”) and tactical data (for both teams and players, tactical concepts such as space control, pressing, ball gains/losses and counters can be tracked).
Possible applications of this data, especially once it’s a more standardized part of the game and the parties involved become familiar with using it, are virtually limitless.
“We can use that information in real time to tell new stories,” Schmidt said. “[We can use] them to create virtual worlds, augmented overlays, insights on performance of players.”
For one thing, expect soccer fans to have new ways of enjoying the game based on this advanced tech. The first layer here will be broadcast improvements: More 3D immersive graphics, similar to the offside renderings 2022 World Cup viewers will see, could be used in several new ways – even those that viewers control. We’ll also see overlaid on-screen data, much like the LA Clippers’ “CourtVision” broadcast option that displays tracking information and a digitized view of the court during play.
And the next wave after that is even more exciting to think about. The world of virtual reality offers tantalizing potential; imagine watching plays (or even an entire game) from the direct vantage point of Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema or any other player of your choosing. Evans and others in the space also expect this data to eventually make its way into the world of video games, merging real and digital realms.
That’s just on the fan side. As the 2022 World Cup tracking setup becomes more commonplace around soccer, players and teams will now have a wealth of new data, particularly surrounding the ball – the true heartbeat of the sport. Tactics, analytics and even all-important health and performance improvements are all on the table.
Said Schmidt: “More and more leagues are now thinking about, ‘How can we enhance the already existing dataset with new insights from the ball?’ Because it’s the head of the game.”
So as tech continues to change the way we view sports, the 2022 World Cup stands poised to serve as a watershed moment. When you see that first “semi-automated” offside call, remember what it took to get to this point – and daydream about what the near future holds.
Russian nuclear major Rosatom’s nuclear fuel arm TVEL’s Senior Vice-President for Research and Improvement Alexander Ugryumov has introduced the new Russian systems and methods for nuclear gas cycle at a modern conference Characterization and top quality command of nuclear fuels in Hyderabad.
The presentation covered the key developments which may well enrich efficiency of the functioning units of the Kudankulam NPP, powered by VVER-1000 reactors, as well as the ones less than design. In particular, it embraced new supplies and designs of nuclear gasoline, alternatives for increased uranium enrichment, technologies of closed nuclear gas cycle and the new potential clients they open for NPPs.
For a longer period gas cycles
In 2022, TVEL begun exports of the far more sophisticated TVS-2M gas to India, as an alternative of the UTVS model, previously provided to Kudankulam. Introduction of the new gasoline enables elongation of the reactors operation in between refuelings sort 12 to 18 months, which would in essence improve the electrical power crops functionality and economic performance (in addition to, TVS-2M product is additional trustworthy). Nevertheless, the new Rosatom’s developments have a potential to make the even further operations of the ability plant, long lasting for many years, even a lot more efficient.
Alexander Ugryumov stressed, that introduction of nuclear gas with enrichment more than the 5{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} amount will enable functions of VVER-1000 reactors in more time 24 months gas cycles. Extending the gas cycle means that a ability plant may cease reactors for refueling less routinely (and thus, make a lot more electrical power per yr), invest in less fresh new gasoline assemblies, and also offload fewer irradiated gas bundles (handling of used fuel also necessitates charges). Making use of gas with uranium enrichment around 5{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} could minimize the amount of yearly replaced fuel bundles by the rate which would supply a important financial influence on the ability models lifecycle.
ATF
A crucial pattern of the latest a long time is the advancement of ATF (Sophisticated Technologies Fuel), a new generation fuel in conditions of safety. Rosatom is also carrying out the Russian ATF plan, which includes progress and screening new gasoline materials, equally of cladding and gas matrix.
In a VVER-1000 reactor at the Rostov NPP, guide exam rod software is under way. A number of gas assemblies that contains ATF fuel rods with innovative claddings made of chromium-nickel alloy, as properly as zirconium alloy with chromium coating, bear irradiation. Alongside with that, in the MIR study reactor at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors in Dimitrovgrad, experimental fuel rods with 4 distinct mixtures of gasoline composition and cladding resources endure the fourth cycle of tests. In addition, tests of VVER and PWR fuel rods with new uranium-silicide fuel has begun in 2022, also in the MIR reactor.
Well balanced gasoline cycle
A aspect of the Russian method is growth of the twin-part nuclear electric power industry with thermal and rapid neutron reactors, as nicely as the introduction of closed nuclear fuel cycle systems, which are based on fabrication of clean uranium-plutonium gas from reprocessed irradiated fuel.
The systems of rapid reactors and nuclear recycling help Rosatom to offer you to its foreign prospects a new integrated item – Well balanced Nuclear Fuel Cycle. It is aimed at essential reduction of the two, the volume of nuclear squander despatched for disposal, and its radiation exercise level. Balanced NFC would make improvements to the safety of squander administration and reduce environmental threats without the need of leaving nuclear legacy for the long run generations, as nicely as assure a sustainable usage and generation model. It will multiply maximize the feed-stock base of nuclear electrical power through involvement of secondary nuclear gas cycle goods, these types of as depleted uranium and plutonium.
Rosatom is completely ready to supply foreign consumers with a comprehensive assortment of remedies, together with processing of expended nuclear gas in Russia (with afterburning of remarkably lively aspects extracted from irradiated fuel in fast reactors), as effectively as production and source of uranium-plutonium gas for prevalent thermal neutrons reactors (in distinct, light-h2o installations, like VVER).
5th era gasoline
In buy to build serial batch output of uranium-plutonium gas for VVER reactors, Rosatom develops the fifth era product of a gas assembly – TVS-5. The capabilities of this design would enable to create a totally automatic unmanned fabricaiton of gas with plutonium and its handling at nuclear electrical power plants. Google not only changes how it presents information to users and updates algorithms, but the way users search is also changing.
SEO best practices are changing every year, so it’s best to keep up with what it means to properly optimize a website today.
Signals Of Authenticity And Usefulness
Google has released five Product Review Updates since April 2021.
The associated guidelines that Google published for writing product reviews recommend specific on-page factors that must exist in order for the page to be ranked for product review-related search queries.
This is an extraordinary change in how sites are ranked. Google has redefined what it means for a webpage to be relevant for a search query.
The definition of relevance simply meant that a webpage has to be about what the user was searching for, in this case, product reviews.
Product reviews were commonly thought of as expressing an opinion about a product, comparing the features of the product to the cost, and expressing a judgment if something is worth purchasing or not.
But now, it’s not enough for a webpage to review a product. It must also be authentic and useful. That’s a big change in how sites are ranked.
“…we are introducing two new best practices for product reviews, to take effect in a future update.
Provide evidence such as visuals, audio, or other links of your own experience with the product, to support your expertise and reinforce the authenticity of your review.
Consider including links to multiple sellers to give the reader the option to purchase from their merchant of choice, if it makes sense for your site.”
Google calls them “best practices” but also says they will “take effect,” which implies that it’s something in the algorithm that is looking for these two qualities.
The first signal is about the authenticity of the product review.
The second signal is specific to sites that don’t sell the reviewed products, and it’s about being useful to site visitors by giving them multiple stores to purchase a product.
Authenticity and usefulness as signals of relevance is a huge shift for SEO.
Search Is Increasingly About Context
Context is the setting in which something is said or done, which provides meaning to those actions or settings.
The context of a search can influence the search results.
What’s happening is that Google is redefining what it means to be relevant by understanding the user context.
When a user searches for [pizza], Google does not show recipes for pizza; it shows local pizza restaurants.
Google defines the meaning of the keyword phrase “pizza” according to the context of the user, which includes the geographic location of that user.
Another context that influences search results is current events, which can change the meaning of a search phrase. This is a part of what is known as the Freshness algorithm.
The Freshness algorithm takes into account time-based factors that can change the meaning of a search phrase, and this influences what websites are shown.
So, those are the contexts of geography and time influencing what it means to be relevant for a search query.
Search Is Increasingly About Topics
As noted in the discussion of the 2013 Hummingbird update, Google is increasingly moving away from keywords and more toward understanding the multiple meanings inherent in search queries.
Google is also redefining relevance through the concept of topics.
When someone searches with the keyword [mustang], the likeliest meaning is the automobile, right?

In the above screenshot, Google lists multiple topics related to the Ford Mustang automobile.
Overview.
Images.
For sale.
Price.
Performance.

Charging.
News.
Reviews.
Specs.
Configurations.
Clicking on any of the above-listed topics results in a different search result.
Some of the top-ranked sites appear on different topics because they are relevant to multiple topics. Something to think about, right?

Back in 2018, Google’s Danny Sullivan tweeted about a way to change the search results by topic, which are the topic buttons we just reviewed above.
In the article, Google explained that it is organizing some searches by topics and subtopics.
“Every search journey is different, and especially if you’re not familiar with the topic, it’s not always clear what your next search should be to help you learn more.
So we’re introducing a new way of dynamically organizing search results that helps you more easily determine what information to explore next.”

People Also Ask (PAA) is a way for Google to help users navigate to the information they’re looking for, particularly when the user searches with a vague keyword phrase, like CBD.
The queries listed in the PAA are topics.
People like to think of them as keyword phrases, but they are more than keywords. They are topics for webpage of content.

Clicking the first topic, “Does CBD do anything?” reveals an article on the topic of whether CBD products work.

Some people and tools like to use every single People Also Ask suggestion box as keywords for use in a single comprehensive article.
But what is missed in that approach is that every individual suggestion is a single topic for one article.
Because Google likes to rank precise content, one would have better luck creating content for each topic rather than a giant page of content on multiple topics since a giant page is not particularly precise.
Google’s focus on topics continues.
On September 28, 2022, Google introduced more ways to craft search queries by topic.
As you start typing in the search box, we’ll provide keyword or topic options to help you craft your question. Say you’re looking for a destination in Mexico. We’ll help you specify your question, so you can navigate to more relevant results for you https://t.co/oWeCGjhevSpic.twitter.com/ywoseDKOWa
Keywords are important because the proper use of the correct keyword phrases will help the content connect with users who use those keywords when searching for answers or information.
Advanced users tend to use more jargon, and less advanced users who have less knowledge will use more general terms.
Given that understanding, it’s important to keep in mind that Google understands the world in terms of topics and not keyword phrases.
When Google looks at a page, it’s understanding the page at the level of, “What’s this page about? What is the topic?”
Content can appear unnatural when the content author focuses on keywords, in my opinion.
This happens is because a keyword-focused article tends to meander as the author tries to stuff the article with the targeted keyword phrases, sometimes repeating.
Keyword-focused content feels unnatural because the author is struggling to create sentences that include the keywords.
A better way to create content, in my opinion, is to focus on topics (as well as usefulness!).
Relevance And Topic Category
For some types of search queries, Google may be ranking sites that belong to a category of sites.
There is a 2015 patent named Re-ranking resources based on categorical quality that describes a way to rank webpages based on whether the category of the content matches the category implied by the search query.
I believe this patent may be related to the August 2018 Google update known as the Medic Update.
It was called the Medic Update because it noticeably affected the category of Health websites.
This patent represents a revolutionary change in how Google determines what is relevant for certain queries and discusses how it will re-rank the search results according to whether a website belongs to a topic category.
Google’s patent first describes two kinds of searches: informational and navigational.
An informational search is one that can be answered by multiple kinds of sites. Google uses examples of queries about football and space travel as the kinds of searches that are informational.
It then notes that navigational queries are when users search using the name of a site, like YouTube.
Then it gets to the point of the patent, which is a type of search query that is relevant to a category of information.
The patent says:
“Sometimes, however, users may have a particular interest in a category of information for which there are a number of well-served resources.”
That’s why the patent is called, “Re-ranking resources based on categorical quality” and in the abstract (the description of the patent) it states, it’s about “re-ranking resources for categorical queries.”
The word “categorical” is used in the sense of something belonging to a category.
A simple description of this patent is that it will rank a search query and then apply a filter to the search results that are based on categories that a search query belongs to. That’s what is meant by the word “re-rank.”
Re-ranking is a process of ranking websites for a search query and then selecting the top results by re-ranking the results based on additional criteria.
The following passage from the patent uses the words “quality condition” and “resources.”
In the context of this patent, the “quality condition” means the quality of being a part of a category.
A “resource” is just a webpage.
It first describes two ranking scenarios. A regular ranking of websites (“search ranking”) and another ranking called a “quality ranking” that ranks pages that belong to a “category.”
Remember, resources mean a webpage, and the quality condition is the quality of belonging to a category.
Here’s the important passage from the patent:
“By re-ranking search results for a proper subset of resources that satisfy a quality condition, the search system provides a set of search results that lists resources that belong to a category according to a quality ranking that differs from a search ranking of a received query.”
Next, it explains the benefit of re-ranking search results based on the “quality with respect to the category.”
“Because the search results are provided according to a ranking that is based, in part, on quality with respect to the category, the search results are more likely to satisfy a user’s informational need when the users issues a query that is categorical for the category.”
Lastly, I call attention to the section titled, Detailed Description, where the patent goes into more detail.
First, it notes that when users don’t know much about a category, they will tend to not use the jargon that is typical for that category and instead use “broader” or more general phrases.
“…when a user knows very little about the category, the queries are more likely to be broader queries.
This is because a user may not have developed an understanding of the category, and may not be aware of the websites and resources that best serve the category.”
Next, the patent says that it will take that general query that is related to a category and match it to sites that fit into that category.
As an example, if someone searches on the topic of pain in the stomach, Google might match that query to the category of medical websites and re-rank the top-ranked search results to only show websites that belong to the medical category of websites.
The patent explains:
“The systems and methods described below re-rank resources for a broad categorical query by their corresponding quality in the category to which the categorical query corresponds.
The set of re-ranked search results are more likely to show the websites and resources that best serve the category.”
To Be Relevant Means To Fit Into A Category
The point of that patent from 2015 is that Google likely changed what it means to be relevant.
For example, for medical queries, Google ranks websites with traditional ranking factors like links and content.
But then Google re-ranks those search results by filtering out all the sites that don’t fit into the right category for that search query.
This change was a radical departure for Google in 2018 because it meant that alternative-health sites that used to rank for medical queries stopped ranking for those queries.
Those sites were not a part of the medical category, they were a part of the alternative-health category.
Google said that the 2018 update was not targeting health sites; it was simply more noticeable in that vertical.
That means that this change applies to a wide range of other categories as well.
This means that the meaning of relevance for some queries has changed. It’s not enough to have certain keywords in the content for certain verticals, the content must also fit into the right category, described by the patent as the “quality with respect to the category.”
Precise Search Results And Keywords
Google’s search ranking algorithms have progressively become more precise.
Precision in search results is something that took off in a big way after Google’s Hummingbird update in 2013.
What made search more precise after the Hummingbird update was that Google wasn’t using all the keywords in a search query to match what is on a webpage.
Instead, what was happening is that Google was ignoring some words, particularly in natural language type searches, and focusing on what that query actually means and then using that understanding to match the search query to a webpage.
Precision is something important to think about when considering how to SEO a webpage.
Google engineer (at the time) Matt Cutts explained:
“Hummingbird is a rewrite of the core search algorithm.
Just to do a better job of matching the users queries with documents, especially for natural language queries, you know the queries get longer, they have more words in them and sometimes those words matter and sometimes they don’t.”
Cutts is quoted again in the above article expanding on the idea of precision:
“…the idea behind Hummingbird is, if you’re doing a query, it might be a natural language query, and you might include some word that you don’t necessarily need…
…Some of those words don’t matter as much.
And previously, Google used to match just the words in the query.
Now, we’re starting to say which ones are actually more helpful and which ones are more important.”
This was the beginning of Google evolving to understand topics and what users really want.
Most importantly, Google’s focus on precision remains and can be seen in their increasingly sophisticated ranking technologies like Google Lens, where Google can rank webpages based on users searching with images from their cell phones.
For example, one can take a snapshot of a bug that’s on the ground and search with that.
Precision In User Intent
A change in search engines dating to approximately 2012/2013 is Google’s increasing use of user intent in search results.
Google didn’t announce the introduction of user intent into the search results.
And the reporting of a June 2011 Q&A between Matt Cutts and Danny Sullivan where Cutts discusses user intent went over the heads of the people reporting it.
In the Q&A, Cutts talks about how Larry Page came to him and asked why the search results for [warm mangoes] weren’t so good.
Cutts wondered what the user intent was for that search and discovered some facts about how warm mangoes ripen in a box.
I was there during the Q&A, and I was blown away by Google’s ambition to integrate user intent into the search results.
But none of the reporting in 2011 understood how the [warm mangoes] search fit into what Cutts was talking about, even though he mentioned the phrase “user intent.”
So, it was just reported as an amusing anecdote about warm mangoes.
Over 10 years later, everyone is talking about user intent.
But there’s a new understanding of intent that goes beyond the current understanding of it.
It’s the understanding that user intent is more than just informational, transactional, etc.
Those categories are actually very general, and there is actually a more nuanced way to understand user intent by understanding the verbs used in search queries.
Dixon Jones of content optimization tools site Inlinks shares their revolutionary approach to understanding user intent:
“Verbs fundamentally change keyword research.
My best practice recommendation is to abandon the notion of “User intent” being described as “Informational/Navigational/Transactional/commercial or Local Intent”.
Boxing user intent into only four vague descriptions is not entirely accurate.
A user’s intent when they search is far more nuanced than trying to do one of four things, it is more specific.
User intent is much better described by analyzing verbs.
Most keyword research data focuses on words or phrases, without understanding user intent, which can lead to fundamental errors.
For example, a site about horses might do keyword research that finds search volumes around phrases like “Mustang” or even “Horse power” which are entirely different topics and concepts, which may or may not be relevant to a website’s topic.
Here is the key point: Words generated through keyword research are not specifically relevant to what anyone searches for without a verb in the search query to give the search context.
The verb “ride” and “mustang” together suggests and entirely different meaning and audience than the verb “drive” and “mustang.”
Further, a phrase like “buy a Mustang” probably isn’t relevant to a horse website because the most popular intent is related to an automobile.
Without any other information about the user, you cannot know for sure other than to make a guess based on the most popular intent.
But it’s still just a guess.
Google may well know more about the user, based on their search history, but all you can do as an SEO is to be true to your website’s topic and purpose.
If you start writing content around a keyword phrase simply because the search volumes are high, it’s possible for the site to lose context, rather than improve context.
Analyzing verbs in keyword research is one of the ideas that we have been researching at InLinks.net.
Using NLP algorithms can help weed out irrelevant keyword suggestions when the entities and verbs in the user queries are checked for proximity to topics in your own content.”
Search Queries Have Evolved
It’s important to note that Google continues to evolve what it means to search. Initially, searching meant typing words into a desktop or laptop computer.
Then, it involved speaking those queries into a mobile phone.
Now, it’s changing to include searching with images through the Google Lens app.
For example, I wanted more information about a bottle of wine at the store. I took a photo of it and submitted it to Google Lens, which returned search results about that wine.
What’s notable about evolving search queries is that it’s Google that is driving the evolution by creating new ways for users to search, such as Google Lens.
“Today at our annual Search On event, we announced nine new ways we’re transforming the way you shop with Google, bringing you a more immersive, informed and personalized shopping experience.
Powering this experience is the Shopping Graph, our AI-enhanced model that now understands more than 35 billion product listings — up from 24 billion just last year.”
And then there is multi-search, a new way to search:
With multisearch, you can take a pic *and* ask a question to get the look you want or fix something. 🤯 We’re bringing this new way to search to 70+ languages. And soon, you’ll be able to add “near me” to your image to find what you’re looking for nearby. #SearchOnpic.twitter.com/RHxRQm42EU
Each change to how users can search and how Google presents information is an opportunity for businesses to claim a share of the new ways of searching and being discovered.
The old way of 10 blue lines is long behind us, powered by changes in technology.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began shuttering offices, more people have been going online in search of legal solutions. This has drastically increased the importance of firms’ digital shopfront – the website – as it is their best shot to make an impactful first impression on potential clients. Leaders and business development specialists talk about how they are pulling out all the stops to outshine their competitors even before any legal work is involved.
WHAT ARE THE PHILOSOPHIES AND PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS UNDERPINNING YOUR FIRM’S WEBSITE DESIGN STRATEGY?
WILLIAM McLAUGHLIN, business development manager, ZICO Law Network
It should go without saying that the most important role of a law firm’s website is to provide useful and concise information for users with clear calls to action. If firms aren’t treating their websites as sales tools, then they are doing it wrong.
You often see websites that are focused only on the firm. There is page after page describing the firm and why they are “unique” but scarcely any demonstration of how its lawyers solve clients’ challenges. The best firm websites do this with short case studies, video intros and explanations from lawyers, and downloadable checklists and other resources.
A hint: No one is going to read that 1,000-word legal update, so cut out all the legalese, break it up into bite-sized sections and turn it into multiple blog posts that are repurposed on the firm’s social media channels.
Another aspect of the website that is overlooked is the branding. There should be consistency across all digital channels and collaterals. You can also drop all the stock imagery and hire a professional photographer to take pictures of the office and staff. Show what it feels like to be a firm client.
In the end, a safe guiding principle would be to focus the design and content more on the client and their issues and less about how great the firm is. If you do the first part right, the second part will be understood.
MARK CHAN, managing partner, Taylor Wessing
In the last few years, Taylor Wessing set out an ambitious growth strategy. We recognised that to enable future growth, we must be truly digital-first in order for Taylor Wessing to keep up with ever-changing consumer behaviour in an interconnected digital environment. This included modernising our marketing and refreshing our brand with a striking new visual identity and website.
We updated the website with a mission to make it easier for users to learn more about our services, access expert legal support and keep up to date on the latest legal developments, including:
Creating a content library to house a plethora of legal insights, opinions and thought leadership content. This helped to establish our lawyers as expert advisors across our key sectors. Furthermore, the new content improved SEO performance by raising Taylor Wessing’s digital presence;
Enhancing personalisation to enable our clients to access information relevant to their region. By increasing our relevancy, we improved the overall user experience;
Improving search functionality and implementing URL breadcrumbs across the site, making it easier for users to navigate our website;
Improving the lawyer profiles by increasing the ways to contact lawyers and adding detail about specialism to allow users to make an informed choice on legal support based on our experts’ marketing leading experience; and
Encouraging an omnichannel approach to the website, connecting the dots between various social channels, and improving analytics to benefit from data-led insights.
DUYEN HA VO, chairperson, Vilaf
Our strategy is to focus on the interest of our clients and potential clients.
We avoid clutter and lengthy texts, and provide strong images and clear, concise messaging, keeping in mind that our clients and potential clients are very busy and dynamic executives. The structure of the website is simple, straightforward, and easy to navigate.
We target to serve our clients and potential clients with important legal updates and legal trends, and regularly touch base with clients to share our firm’s and our people’s stories, professional achievements and what we are doing.
On the landing page of our website, we wanted to show Vilaf’s linkages in the world with an interesting video clip while incorporating Vietnamese images into the rest of the website’s design to depict our culture. This best shows what Vilaf is all about: a law firm with deep roots and wide reach.
ZIPPORA SIREGAR, managing partner, William Hendrik & Siregar Djojonegoro
Within the legal sector, a firm’s website is important as it represents its culture and credibility. A good website design should portray the background, philosophy and values of the firm and highlight the legal expertise and reputation , which are important for visitors to learn and understand the firm.
The core philosophies underpinning our firm’s website design strategy are efficiency, cohesion and credibility, which are aimed at satisfying the demands of the modern business environment. We designed a simple yet modern design for our website that represents our firm’s strong value of professionalism. We also created a concise and cohesive website to ensure that visitors could find the information they are looking for much faster and clearer. Additionally, the navigation bar helps the information on the website to be more organised and accessible.
Through our website design, we aim to show how much we value communication with our clients. We have created a chatbot on our website to enable visitors to reach out and communicate with us easily.
JASON CORBETT, managing partner, Silk Legal
Silk Legal has always upheld the philosophy of “thinking outside the box” and pushing past the status quo when it comes to creativity and developing tools to further expand our business.
Our firm recently launched a separate, but closely affiliated, website to compete in the saturated field of company formation and corporate support services in Thailand. MyThaiCompany.com offers personalised incorporation, accounting, and company secretarial services for foreign entrepreneurs and investors in Thailand. This new website aims to add value to businesses by helping clients navigate the complex requirements of setting up and maintaining a local company, while maintaining Silk Legal’s USP of having lawyers advise on these comprehensive services.
MyThaiCompany.com was designed not as a separate business from Silk Legal, but rather as a complimentary platform that utilises the resources and expertise of the firm. With this in mind, we decided to pursue a design language and copywriting style that made information about the various processes and services as digestible and easy to understand as possible. We also incorporated best practices in structuring and calls-to-action to ensure that any interaction with the website is as smooth as possible.
We also added a corporate formation survey that serves as a tool for both prospective clients and us. By inputting information about their business into the survey, a user can get a better idea of what they need to set up their business. At the same time, the information provided by the user can give us a clearer understanding of their business needs and makes it much easier for us to provide bespoke solutions.
Entrepreneurship is one of Silk Legal’s core tenets, and MyThaiCompany specifically targets pain points that affect entrepreneurs and investors. Its core aim is to provide exceptional service to clients wishing to expand or start their businesses in Thailand.
OWEN WILLIAMS, partner and marketing & business development director, Simmons & Simmons
When we embarked on developing our website, we were clear that the site had to support our vision to deliver smarter solutions to our clients’ most complex challenges. Our culture, personality and brand had to shine through.
Content needed to be timely, readily surfaced, and easy to share with clients. We needed to promote our key sectors and areas of expertise by bringing them into focus. The experience must be valuable offering opinions, not just options, with practical support, tools and products to reach a solution. The list of requirements was long, but one of the fundamental objectives for us was that it had to be built on cutting-edge technology.
The digital landscape is ever-changing and evolving, so we wanted to build a site that could keep pace with today and tomorrow. We now focus on improving our customer journey through enhanced interactivity, accessibility and site search. To become a next-generation law firm, we must place innovation and technology at the core of our client offering.
SOPHIE BOWKETT, chief marketing officer, Bird & Bird
Over the last decade, our clients’ world has changed, and we have changed, but our website and brand didn’t always reflect that. We needed to better showcase our unique “one firm” culture, our technical understanding of clients’ issues, and needed a more emotive brand that showed our clients that we are with them and alongside them.
Our new brand strategy and visual identity marked an exciting and bold shift from a “traditional law firm” to a bright, fresh look and feel. As an international law firm with almost 3000 people in 31 offices, this represented a significant and once-in-a-generation undertaking. We brought the brand to life through a new website that focused on providing an improved user experience, clearer navigation, and a more dynamic design. The changes resulted in a 30{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} increase in website visitors post-launch and a click-through rate four times higher than average on our social media channels.
