The 3 Components of Success in a Holistic SEO Plan

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

If there’s one piece of advice that business owners should follow to win at search engine optimization, it’s this: Stop putting it in a box. More often than not, people assume that ranking in searches only involves simply researching keywords and building links. And yes, they matter, but are just parts of a larger equation, and certainly shouldn’t be your only focus. Ranking higher in Google and attracting qualified and enduring traffic require a mindset shift. This is where holistic SEO comes in.

What is holistic SEO?

The term, broadly, refers to improving every aspect of a website rather than focusing on one, or just a few. Getting all the key elements of SEO correctly not only boosts your brand’s organic search visibility, it also keeps visitors happy and makes them want to do business with you. In order to understand holistic SEO, a business owner should remember Google’s approach with searches, which is to help people access the best information and present it in the most useful way. Therefore, a holistic plan include three tasks: content design, user experience (UX) and semantic structure.

1. Content design

It’s no secret that visual content increases the value of a website for users, but when left unoptimized, it can slow down its performance. Here are a few factors to consider:

  • Mobile-friendliness. If you haven’t done it yet, be sure to check if your site can be viewed and used easily on smartphones and tablets, as more than half of searches done through Google now come from mobile devices. One way to make your site mobile-friendly is to use clean navigation. Speed is another important aspect to improve, especially given Google’s Core Web Vitals.
  • Images. While large and crisp images look great, any browser will need more time to load them, which is why they should be reduced if possible. Using schema markup for products or images also helps improve a website SERP (search engine results pages) presence.
  • Code. Websites that have been built using JavaScript offer more interactivity. However, it creates issues with crawling, rendering and indexing content. Anyone who uses JavaScript frameworks should not panic, but start diagnosing potential issues in Google Search Console. JavaScript SEO is an extremely powerful tactic to that end.

2. User experience

Usually referred to as UX, this is a visitor’s perception of a site. If they’re able to find what they’re looking for and meet goals (like making a purchase), this translates to better rankings. Fortunately, there are metrics you can track to determine the quality of these experiences. They include:

  • Bounce rate. This describes the percentage of people that leave a page without taking any sort of action. A high bounce rate can mean a lot of things, including the possibility that the site loads slowly or that a web page lacks a call-to-action (CTA).
  • Dwell time. This is the amount of time users spend on a page before clicking back to SERPs. One of the keys to increasing this is to make sure that your page has useful and valuable content.
  • Core web vitals. Google introduced a set of metrics for user experience that broadly define this new ranking signal, which include Largest Contentful Paint (loading speed), First Input Delay (responsiveness/interactivity) and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). Click on the web vitals link above for more detail.

3. Semantic structure

When it comes to creating content for an audience, it’s easy to miss the meaning behind queries; you might, for example, optimize only for keywords without considering a user’s search path or intent. Understanding why and how people search for what they do and how to optimize for it, a site’s semantic structure will enable you to create better content.

Here are some SEO plan tips:

  • Cover a topic in depth. Rather than creating shorter articles on individual topics, write comprehensive guides based on broad topics. This makes it easier for readers to get all the information they need at once.
  • Write using natural language. This means writing in a conversational way, similar to the way you would speak. Also, aim for shorter sentences that get a point across briskly. If your content isn’t great for readers, it will not be great for search engines.
  • Embrace the knowledge graph. Google developed the Knowledge Graph system to help searchers gain access to information quickly by showing it in a panel at the right portion of search results (desktop), so make sure your website schema structure is correct and your content is accurate. Part of your SEO plan should also include increasing authority in your niche, so that Google perceives the content as trustworthy.

Gone are the days of keyword stuffing and over-optimization. Take content design, user experience and semantic structure into account to create a well-rounded SEO strategy and search engine visibility that lasts. Include the tips discussed above on your holistic SEO checklist, and most importantly, do research. SEO takes a lot of work, but it also boils down to more profitability, and making the web a better place.

Medical technology: Is it always the latest and greatest?

Special to the AFRO

The Oxford dictionary defines technology as the “application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.” Another definition states that “technology is the application of scientific knowledge to the practical aims of human life.” Medicine is a science that constantly evolves and simultaneously stays the same.  The construction of the human body doesn’t change. It has suffered many of the same conditions and maladies for centuries. It constantly evolves because technology means we find new ways to treat or even cure old and new diseases. With this evolution even comes new names; diabetes used to be referred to as “sugar.” Parkinson’s disease was called “the shakes.”  We learned about leprosy in the Bible, now it’s called Hansen’s disease.  Today we survive ailments and acute medical crises that may have killed us as recently as 40-50 years ago.

There are tremendous advances in medical technology. Today, diagnoses, treatment, monitoring, surgical techniques and even how we disseminate and receive information are all more accurate and efficient because of technology. This includes areas of specialty like cardiology, the treatment of lungs and kidneys as well as the tools, machines, and appliances we use for treatment. Even recovery times are greatly reduced.

Dr. Andrew Faber is a board-certified internist with more than 30 years of experience. He’s currently a hospitalist at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, but previously managed inpatient and outpatient care for urban, suburban, and rural patients in upstate New York for many years.

“There is a very important lesson about how to use technology that I think can get lost,” said Faber. “In our country we’re constantly looking for numbers and data and the fact is when we take care of patients, certainly when I do, the patient needs to be the focus and that’s the important lesson that gets lost.” Faber emphasizes that while the advances in all specializations have been tremendous, technology needs to be used in conjunction with other factors. There is a place for it and doctors and other medical professionals must be mindful of how they’re applied. He discussed the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs) as an example. MRI pictures have become so accurate; they find a lot of anatomic issues that might not be problems but lead to unnecessary surgeries and procedures. “Just because you can use something or do a procedure doesn’t mean you should,” Faber stated. Having numbers and data so readily and immediately available may lead to patients and caregivers alike getting bogged down in details. According to Faber, “Details are helpful but mean nothing if a patient doesn’t feel well.  For example, a decrease in white blood cell count may be a good sign, but if I check on my patient and he or she feels horrible, we need to consider the numbers and data along with what we find out about how their day went, and what the nurse says about what kind of night they had and put it all together to come up with a plan.”

Dr. Kamala Littleton is an expert orthopedic surgeon with Orthopedics and Joint Replacement at Mercy Medical Center, in Baltimore, Md., and she leads the Women’s Orthopedic Program at Mercy.

Robotics are a relatively recent advance in technology as relates to joint replacement, meaning within the last 5-10 years. With robotic knee replacement, a computerized robot helps the surgeon make accurate bone cuts, and not allowing too much to be cut. The patient has a CAT scan ahead of the surgery, during which decisions are made about what will take place during the procedure.  The robot is subsequently able to communicate with the CAT scan results to make sure there is a desirable outcome.  All the joint surgeons at Mercy offer robotic knee replacement. While Littleton is respectful of the new technology, she prefers to take a more conservative approach.  “In my opinion, knee replacement is more art than science,” stated Littleton; a robot can’t balance ligaments which is important for proper recovery and the success of a knee replacement. Her team respects the technology and believes it will be even better in the future.   Littleton has years of specialized training to perform anterior hip replacement as well as MAKO knee resurfacing and knee replacement.  Littleton’s innovative procedures and surgical expertise make her a top choice for patients seeking relief from hip, knee, and shoulder pain.

Respiratory therapy, as defined by the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC), “is the health care discipline specializing in the promotion of optimum cardiopulmonary function, health, and wellness. Respiratory therapists are educated, trained and licensed professionals who employ scientific principles to identify, treat, and prevent acute or chronic dysfunction of the cardiopulmonary system.”   If you discuss technology in respiratory care, a respiratory therapist is likely to mention machinery.  Dr. Tamara Douglass, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Towson University, in Towson, Maryland, agrees the machines represent the biggest technological change in respiratory patient care.

“The advances are so significant that respiratory students now aren’t taught certain types of equipment anymore.  They’re still taught most of the same concepts, but some of the machines I learned on, like a MA1 ventilator don’t exist anymore,” said Douglass. The equipment today is all computerized and controlled with push pads; no buttons or knobs. We’re taught all about the body and respiratory system, but today you almost need to spend as much time being technically literate.”

Douglass has been a respiratory therapist for 31 years.  She currently specializes in cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation and sleep studies.  Even sleep studies are greatly changed by advances in technology. Sleep studies used to involve reading pages and pages of paperwork generated by brain waves during eight hours of sleep. Now it can all be reviewed live on the computer screen as the patient sleeps.

A Director of Respiratory of Therapy for a large urban hospital (who’s requested not to be identified) also points to the machinery and equipment as the biggest changes in technology for respiratory care.  “We used to walk around with calculators but now the machines calculate everything,” he said. He went on to describe how every department is trying to do more with less; less staff, less equipment, less budget, less everything. Machines are used to make up the for the deficit which means machines need to be able to do a lot and do it efficiently. However, he believes a step is lost when relying so much on today’s machinery. “I’ve been doing this for over 30 years, and I’ve noticed that some therapists today don’t want to really learn the craft the way we did. They’re taught to let the machines manage everything, but you still need to be able to know the concepts and make calculations on your own. Machines won’t always know everything.  They malfunction, so you still need to learn your craft.” He also explained the need to constantly research and stay abreast of new equipment and techniques. Patients may come to the hospital with their own equipment, and respiratory therapists need to know how to quickly learn and manage unfamiliar equipment.  Sales reps are always pitching new equipment and as director he makes decisions on what equipment gets purchased to keep respiratory departments running seamlessly so patient care isn’t compromised.

Advances in medical technology means acquiring and using the latest cutting-edge procedures and equipment, as well as discovering new ways to use current equipment, knowledge, and skill sets.  Navigating Covid led to new discoveries such as high flow oxygen as a better treatment for some patients instead of intubation.  Laparoscopy and ultrasound, while not new technologies, are constantly evolving and improving. They allow for minimally invasive procedures with less bleeding and quicker and less traumatic recovery.  Risks are reduced and patients commonly have surgery and go home within hours.

Then there are devices like the cardiac life vest, a wearable defibrillator that continuously monitors and automatically detects abnormal heart rhythm caused by the heart’s pumping chambers. If necessary, it may deliver an electric shock to restore the heart’s normal rhythm (defibrillation), and perhaps prevent sudden cardiac arrest.

There is absolutely a place for technology in medicine.  It promotes the most current and optimal care for patients. There are things being done today that were not imagined as recently as 20 years ago. However, it’s essential to know what your caregiver does best. While reading and researching the latest in treatments, procedures, and devices, remember to research what your doctor does best – whether it’s the latest surgery or a long-established procedure and treatment plan.

In that circumstance, what need to?

Prioritize your emphasis on full addressable markets, the toughness of the administration group, the amount and quality of products innovation and how persuasive the benefit proposition of the products or the provider is to clients. What valuation-to start with investors have missed is how potent the combination of the over 4 variables can be in driving high quality expansion for a long time and decades. Which in transform can convert corporations with “massive valuations” into hugely reasonably-priced stocks.

You have included tech shares for a prolonged time. What is the state of them now and your outlook for what is vital next?

The international unfold of smartphones and the rise of global marketing and advertising platforms like Google and Fb and Amazon have authorized firms to scale in a way that they by no means could prior to 10 years ago. And the rise of cloud computing has allowed them to scale at a fraction of what it would have cost in the past. Around-phrase, there is no query that Covid has accelerated the digitization of just about everything.

What is the stock or spot you feel needs far more attention in the upcoming?

I am extremely intrigued by the metaverse. For two causes: At least two very thriving tech platforms (Facebook and Microsoft) are investing in this chance and the Roblox era is and will be properly relaxed living in the metaverse. Just question your young ones! Just one stock? Uber, which is almost unquestionably a long-expression winner from the Covid crisis. But it is not trading like it. It’s nonetheless 25 per cent off its highs, whilst most of the main tech corporations are investing at their all-time highs. And it screens perfectly for me on these 4 conditions I pointed out ahead of.

A couple of months back, I praised a letter that the Activision Blizzard chief govt Bobby Kotick sent to workers addressing studies of sexual harassment and discrimination that emerged right after California officials this summer time submitted a lawsuit towards the tremendous online video match firm he grew from following to nothing. I wrote that it was a great point to be obvious about the thorny difficulties at the business, which makes hits like “Call of Duty,” title answers and, most of all, to get duty.“The guardrails weren’t in location everywhere you go to guarantee that our values had been remaining upheld,” Kotick wrote in the letter. “In some situations, people didn’t continuously come to feel relaxed reporting issues, or their problems weren’t constantly addressed immediately or properly.”

Which includes by him, in accordance to a devastating report from The Wall Road Journal this 7 days that painted a extremely unsightly photograph of a main who was hoping to tamp down troubles, rather than resolve them.

The crux, from The Journal’s story: “Mr. Kotick has explained to administrators and other executives he wasn’t mindful of numerous of the allegations of misconduct, and he has played down other people, in accordance to individuals acquainted with the make a difference and inner paperwork.

Florida Tech and Heinz Grow Space Tomatoes for Ketchup | Florida News

By AMIRA SWEILEM, Florida Nowadays

MELBOURNE, Fla. (AP) — For a long time, anyone browsing for the “taste” of the Apollo moon program could access for these small packets of freeze-dried ice product that ended up developed to carry America’s 1st astronauts some ersatz ease and comfort foodstuff on their journey to the lunar surface area.

Now with journey to Mars on the horizon, the time has occur for room ice product to stage apart and make place for the taste of a new era of planetary journey: tomato ketchup, the “Marz Edition.”

Heinz, a enterprise synonymous with ketchup, successfully funded and collaborated with biologists at Florida Tech’s Aldrin House Institute to expand tomatoes in Mars-like conditions right here on the Space Coastline to present at the time and for all that even on faraway worlds human beings can have the best condiment.

The experiment is the initially of its variety. It in fact produced a solitary bottle of ketchup that was unveiled on Nov. 15 at Heinz HQ in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Political Cartoons

With the aid of 14 graduate and undergraduate learners, Andrew Palmer, affiliate professor of biological sciences at Florida Tech, grew 450 tomato vegetation in regolith, the unfastened unconsolidated rock and dust that go over planets like Mars.

Heinz was surely happy of the accomplishment that took two many years to entire.

“The staff productively yielded a crop of Heinz tomatoes, from the brand’s proprietary tomato seeds, with the exacting traits that move the arduous excellent and flavor standards to grow to be its iconic ketchup,” the company mentioned in a assertion.

Even though Heinz has no plans to sell any of its Marz Edition ketchup just nonetheless, the job signifies far more than just area-age, pop-culture marketing and advertising. There was significant science driving it with implications for everyday living on earth as very well as on the pink world as experts seem to increase foods in poor soils.

“Before now, most attempts all over finding methods to increase in Martian-simulated ailments are shorter-term plant progress research. What this challenge has carried out is look at lengthy-expression food harvesting,” claimed Palmer in a news launch from Heinz.

A person of the most important hurdles with producing foodstuff on Mars, Palmer mentioned, is the change among Earth and Martian soil. According to Palmer, the important distinction is that Martian soil is not genuinely soil. Regolith “doesn’t have any organic matter, so there is absolutely nothing alive…so there is not a ton of organic materials there,” said Palmer.

To mimic Martian regolith, the team made use of 7,800 lbs . of soil from the Mojave Desert — a terracotta-coloured grit that is related to Martian regolith, according to a statement launched by the Florida Institute of Technology. Although the regolith is dry and wonderful, the team discovered that it did not call for additional water to maintain the plants than it would have with regular soil.

The tomatoes grew in a greenhouse at Florida Tech’s Centre for Sophisticated Producing and Progressive Design and style in Palm Bay referred to as the “Red House.” Temperatures at the Red Property fluctuated in between 73 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit, based on if it was nighttime or daytime, Palmer said.

The tomatoes made beneath these ailments ended up held to large specifications, stated Palmer. Heinz has “Tomato Masters” who examine the top quality of the tomatoes developed to assure that they satisfy experienced foods-grade benchmarks.

When Palmer and his group tried using the tomatoes, he explained they tasted like tomatoes grown from normal soil. “For me the most important point was odor…They have extremely robust like tomato high quality smell to them,” Palmer explained.

The two-calendar year partnership started out with an email that Palmer initially assumed was a prank. Nonetheless, just after a next go through-by way of, Palmer understood Heinz was intrigued in partnering with his lab to cultivate Martian tomatoes, claimed Palmer.

Heinz was most certainly crowing about the achievement.

“We’re so enthusiastic that our workforce of gurus has been equipped to grow tomatoes in disorders located on a further earth and share our generation with the planet. From examining the soil from Martian ailments two yrs ago to harvesting now, it’s been a journey that’s proved where ever we close up, HEINZ Tomato Ketchup will nonetheless be appreciated for generations to occur,” Cristina Kenz, main advancement officer for Kraft Heinz Worldwide Zone, mentioned.

Nevertheless the project is now about, the investigate has cross-planetary implications.

Palmer’s workforce documented every component of the process: fertilizer made use of, aspects of the water made use of, and temperatures. The details is vital for hoping to copy the experiment on Mars. But Palmer said that the info would also gain agricultural methods here on earth.

“As we feel about sustainable agriculture right here, the same fears about inputs will need to be thought of here, proper? So as we acquire modern-day agriculture, some of you know our inexperienced revolution that we’re hoping to produce now, component of that is knowing particularly how significantly fertilizer you are making use of and optimizing that so that you do not get run off ideal. So that you don’t have squandered fertilizer that pollutes our lakes or lagoons,” said Palmer.

Even though the results from the project ended up fruitful, Palmer reported that it’ll be a when before astronauts will be planting foods on Mars.

“We’re producing a lot more and far more development. I feel this is an critical component of that. But…what I hope definitely is the most important factor from this, is it attracts awareness back again to the discipline and gets individuals actually wondering a lot more about funding this investigate and the importance of this research in planning for that,” reported Palmer.

New technology exposes liars through telltale activation of facial muscles

New technology exposes liars through telltale activation of facial muscles
Set up, undertaking course of action, and behavioral final results. The participants concluded a two-man or woman deception task, when their facial muscle exercise was recorded utilizing facial floor electromyography. (a) An 8-electrode array was positioned on each participant’s encounter, with five electrodes recording from the zygomaticus important muscle (cheek region) and 3 from the corrugator supercilia muscle mass (eyebrows areas). (b) The members took turns acting as Sender and Receiver. The Sender would listen to a information through earphones (both “KAV” or “ETZ” stimulus occasion), then would both repeat the phrase (Reality) or utter the other word (Lie speech function). Then, the Receiver would reveal via vital push whether they considered the Sender (Real truth) or not (Lie). Depicted are two illustrations of trials: Lie-Truth of the matter (top panel) and Reality-Lie (base panel). (c) The individuals lied in approximately half of the trials, and the frequency of lying amplified amongst the two levels of the experiment (leading panel). The Receivers’ detection of the Senders’ lying was at chance level, and time and financial incentives did not transform their performance (bottom panel). Credit score: DOI: 10.1002/brb3.2386

Researchers at Tel Aviv College detected 73{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of the lies informed by trial members centered on the contraction of their facial muscles—achieving a increased rate of detection than any recognised approach. The study identified two unique teams of ‘liars’: those people who activate their cheek muscles when they lie, and those people who activate their eyebrows. According to the researchers, the technologies has great potential for detecting deception in authentic-everyday living contexts, these kinds of as stability and criminal offense.

The study was done by a crew of authorities from Tel Aviv College headed by Prof. Yael Hanein of the Middle of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and School of Electrical Engineering, Iby and Aladar Fleischman Faculty of Engineering, and Prof. Dino Levy from the Coller College of Management. The staff provided Dr. Anastasia Shuster, Dr. Lilach Inzelberg, Dr. Uri Ossmy and Ph.D. prospect Liz Izakon. The paper was released in Mind and Behavior.

The new analyze was launched upon a groundbreaking innovation from Prof. Hanein’s laboratory: stickers printed on gentle surfaces containing electrodes that keep an eye on and evaluate the exercise of muscle tissues and nerves. The know-how, presently commercialized by X-trodes Ltd., has lots of apps, these types of as checking slumber at household and early prognosis of neurological ailments. This time, the scientists selected to check out its efficiency in a distinctive arena—lie detection.

Prof. Levy suggests, “Numerous studies have proven that it’s virtually not possible for us to convey to when another person is lying to us. Even authorities, this sort of as law enforcement interrogators, do only a small greater than the rest of us. Present lie detectors are so unreliable that their outcomes are not admissible as proof in courts of law—because just about any individual can find out how to command their pulse and deceive the device. Consequently, there is a fantastic need to have for a much more exact deception-figuring out technological innovation. Our study is based mostly on the assumption that facial muscle mass contort when we lie, and that so much, no electrodes have been delicate ample to evaluate these contortions.”

The researchers connected the novel stickers with their distinctive electrodes to two teams of facial muscle groups: the cheek muscular tissues close to the lips, and the muscle tissue about the eyebrows. Members were requested to sit in pairs going through 1 a further, with 1 sporting headphones by which the words and phrases ‘line’ or ‘tree’ were transmitted. When the wearer read ‘line’ but explained ‘tree’ or vice versa he was of course lying, and his partner’s job was to attempt and detect the lie. Then the two subjects switched roles.

As expected, members were unable to detect their partners’ lies with any statistical importance. However, the electrical signals sent by the electrodes attached to their experience discovered the lies at an unprecedented results amount of 73{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca}.

Prof. Levy says, “Because this was an original review, the lie alone was really very simple. Normally when we lie in true daily life, we explain to a for a longer time tale which consists of each misleading and truthful factors. In our review, we experienced the edge of being aware of what the individuals heard by way of the headsets, and hence also being aware of when they ended up lying. Thus, using sophisticated machine learning approaches, we qualified our program to discover lies centered on EMG (electromyography) indicators coming from the electrodes. Applying this method, we obtained an accuracy of 73{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca}—not great, but a lot greater than any present know-how. A different attention-grabbing discovery was that people lie by means of diverse facial muscle tissues: Some lie with their cheek muscle mass and others with their eyebrows.”

The scientists think that their final results can have spectacular implications in quite a few spheres of our life. In the upcoming, the electrodes may well develop into redundant, with video clip software properly trained to determine lies based on the true movements of facial muscle tissues. Prof. Levy states, “In the bank, in law enforcement interrogations, at the airport, or in on-line task interviews, large-resolution cameras skilled to establish movements of facial muscle groups will be capable to tell truthful statements from lies. Suitable now, our team’s job is to finish the experimental stage, coach our algorithms and do away with the electrodes. After the technological innovation has been perfected, we be expecting it to have various, highly various applications.”
