Could Roads Recharge Electric Cars? The Technology May Be Close.

Other challenges may slow the electric road of the future. “To put this in context, inroad charging while driving is not likely to be a broad solution for all electric vehicles, but it could play an important role for some applications,” said Jeremy J. Michalek, professor of engineering and public policy and director of the vehicle electrification group at Carnegie Mellon University.

“For passenger cars, most drivers will leave home on most days with a full tank of electricity, and EV range is growing large enough that most drivers won’t need public charging except on rare long-distance travel days,” he said.

But there is a bigger problem that these kinds of roadways can solve. “For long-haul trucking, inroad charging aims to address a real problem with electrifying trucks,” Mr. Michalek said. Electric trailer trucks require large battery packs that reduce payload; inroad charging could help, though that amount of long-distance travel would require a huge investment in infrastructure.

Inroad charging will also need to “withstand all of the weight and weather abuse that tears up our roads today. There may be particular applications where inroad charging infrastructure could be targeted to select locations, such as bus stops or fleets with fixed routes and known stops,” he said.

The Purdue team is mindful of these challenges, but optimistic. “The technical obstacles that we need to overcome are not insurmountable,” Mr. Aliprantis said. “Those can be overcome with proper design.”

There are, however, regulatory barriers, he said. “For example, in Indiana if you’re not a utility, you cannot resell electricity. So, if you’re the roadway operator, you cannot charge the vehicles for the electricity they consume. Also, there are obstacles to using the interstate right of way right now to install this infrastructure. There are certain regulations that need to change before this becomes a reality, at least in this country.”

Moreover, electric grids will need to increase capacity to guarantee they can cover the demand that will be created. “Especially if we want to implement this technology at scale, because we’re not charging cellphones, we’re charging big vehicles moving at freeway speeds, which require a significant amount of power,” he said.

For the Purdue project, it’s the start of the road trip.

“We see this technology as a great opportunity to align with the vision from the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration of alternative fuel corridors along major national roadways that support plug-in electric vehicle charging, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas refueling with existing or planned infrastructure,” Ms. Gkritza said. “We are not proposing that all roads will be 100 percent electrified.”

When Ashlee Wisdom launched an early version of her health and wellness website, more than 34,000 users — most of them Black — visited the platform in the first two weeks.

“It wasn’t the most fully functioning platform,” recalls Wisdom, 31. “It was not sexy.”

But the launch was successful. Now, more than a year later, Wisdom’s company, Health in Her Hue, connects Black women and other women of color to culturally sensitive doctors, doulas, nurses and therapists nationally.

As more patients seek culturally competent care — the acknowledgment of a patient’s heritage, beliefs and values during treatment — a new wave of Black tech founders like Wisdom want to help. In the same way Uber Eats and Grubhub revolutionized food delivery, Black tech health startups across the United States want to change how people exercise, how they eat and also how they communicate with doctors.

Inspired by their own experiences, plus those of their parents and grandparents, Black entrepreneurs are launching startups that aim to close the cultural gap in health care with technology — and create profitable businesses at the same time.

Seeing problems and solutions others miss

“One of the most exciting growth opportunities across health innovation is to back underrepresented founders building health companies focusing on underserved markets,” says Unity Stoakes, president and co-founder of StartUp Health, a company headquartered in San Francisco that has invested in a number of health companies led by people of color. He says those leaders have “an essential and powerful understanding of how to solve some of the biggest challenges in health care.”

Platforms created by Black founders for Black people and communities of color continue to blossom because those entrepreneurs often see problems and solutions others might miss. Without diverse voices, entire categories and products simply would not exist in critical areas like health care, experts in business say.

“We’re really speaking to a need,” says Kevin Dedner, 45, founder of the mental health startup Hurdle. “Mission alone is not enough. You have to solve a problem.”

Dedner’s company, headquartered in Washington, D.C., pairs patients with therapists who “honor culture instead of ignoring it,” he says. He started the company three years ago, but more people turned to Hurdle after the killing of George Floyd.

In Memphis, Tenn., Erica Plybeah, 33, is focused on providing transportation. Her company, MedHaul, works with providers and patients to secure low-cost rides to get people to and from their medical appointments. Caregivers, patients or providers fill out a form on MedHaul’s website, then Plybeah’s team helps them schedule a ride.

While MedHaul is for everyone, Plybeah knows people of color, anyone with a low income and residents of rural areas are more likely to face transportation hurdles. She founded the company in 2017 after years of watching her mother take care of her grandmother, who’d had to have both legs amputated because of complications from Type 2 diabetes. They lived in the Mississippi Delta, where transportation options were scarce.

“For years, my family struggled with our transportation because my mom was her primary transporter,” Plybeah says. “Trying to schedule all of her doctor’s appointments around her work schedule was just a nightmare.”

Plybeah’s company recently received funding from Citi, the banking giant.

“I’m more than proud of her,” says Plybeah’s mother, Annie Steele. “Every step amazes me. What she is doing is going to help people for many years to come.”

From six doctors to 1,000 health providers in three years

Health in Her Hue launched in 2018 with just six doctors on the roster. Two years later, users can download the app at no cost and then scroll through roughly 1,000 providers.

“People are constantly talking about Black women’s poor health outcomes, and that’s where the conversation stops,” says Wisdom, who lives in New York City. “I didn’t see anyone building anything to empower us.”

As her business continues to grow, Wisdom draws inspiration from friends such as Nathan Pelzer, 37, another Black tech founder, who has launched a company in Chicago. Clinify Health works with community health centers and independent clinics in underserved communities. The company analyzes medical and social data to help doctors identify their most at-risk patients and those they haven’t seen in awhile. By focusing on getting those patients preventive care, the medical providers can help them improve their health and avoid trips to the emergency room.

“You can think of Clinify Health as a company that supports triage outside of the emergency room,” Pelzer says.

Pelzer says he started the company by printing out online slideshows he’d made and throwing them in the trunk of his car. “I was driving around the South Side of Chicago, knocking on doors, saying, ‘Hey, this is my idea,'” he says.

Her experience as a patient offered fresh perspective

Wisdom got her app idea from being so stressed while working a job during grad school that she broke out in hives.

“It was really bad,” Wisdom recalls. “My hand would just swell up and I couldn’t figure out what it was.”

The breakouts also baffled her allergist, a white woman, who told Wisdom to take two Allegra every day to manage the discomfort. “I remember thinking if she was a Black woman, I might have shared a bit more about what was going on in my life,” Wisdom says.

The moment inspired her to build an online community. Her idea started off small. She found health content in academic journals, searched for eye-catching photos that would complement the text and then posted the information on Instagram.

Things took off from there. This fall, Health in Her Hue launched “care squads” for users who want to discuss their health with doctors or with other women interested in the same topics.

“The last thing you want to do when you go into the doctor’s office is feel like you have to put on an armor and feel like you have to fight the person or, like, you know, be at odds with the person who’s supposed to be helping you on your health journey,” Wisdom says. “And that’s oftentimes the position that Black people, and largely also Black women, are having to deal with as they’re navigating health care. And it just should not be the case.”

“We’re each other’s therapists”

As Black tech founders, Wisdom, Dedner, Pelzer and Plybeah look for ways to support one another by trading advice, chatting about funding and looking for ways to come together. Pelzer and Wisdom met a few years ago as participants in a competition sponsored by Johnson & Johnson. They reconnected at a different event for Black founders of technology companies and decided to help each other.

“We’re each other’s therapists,” Pelzer says. “It can get lonely out here as a Black founder.”

In the future, Plybeah wants to offer transportation services and additional assistance to people caring for aging family members. She also hopes to expand the service to include dropping off customers for grocery and pharmacy runs, workouts at gyms and other basic errands.

Pelzer wants Clinify Health to make tracking health care more fun — possibly with incentives to keep users engaged. He is developing plans and wants to tap into the same competitive energy that fitness companies do.

Wisdom wants to support physicians who seek to improve their relationships with patients of color. The company plans to build a library of resources that professionals could use as a guide.

“We’re not the first people to try to solve these problems,” Dedner says. Yet he and the other three feel the pressure to succeed for more than just themselves and those who came before them.

“I feel like if I fail, that’s potentially going to shut the door for other Black women who are trying to build in this space,” Wisdom says. “But I try not to think about that too much.”

A Repeatable Process For Building And Scaling E-Commerce Brands

Helping C-level executives implement marketing strategies since 1999. Senior Marketing Consultant at goTRG.

When you’ve built multiple e-commerce brands and scaled them beyond $1,000,000 in revenue like I have, there are some steps you learn not to skip. Eventually, these become standard operating procedures (SOPs) — repeatable systems for growing successful brands.

It’s as simple as following a familiar road to a preferred location. Let me draw you a map.

How To Create A Strong Brand Identity And A Story Your Customer Avatar Will Relate To

This process starts with an intimate understanding of who your ideal customer is and how you can provide a unique solution to their problem or aspiration.

Once you have the customer avatar nailed down, it’s time to find a list of people that match the description — your dream 100.

What Is The Dream 100?

Your dream 100 is a document identifying real people (aim for 100) who are your ideal customers. You can find dream customers in a variety of places, from social media to Amazon reviews.

As an entrepreneur, it’s important to have an evolving idea of your customer avatar and dream 100 to make brand decisions. You want to know exactly what their problems and goals are so that you can craft your messaging accordingly.

How To Craft Your Message

With a clear understanding of who your dream 100 is, you can craft messaging that will resonate with them — or easily outsource the task to a copywriter.

Most copywriters have their own research process, and they may want to interview you, but providing them with your customer avatar will always be helpful.

It’s important that your content is ready before you get started on your website’s design.

UX And UI Design: What They Are And Why They’re Important

User experience (UX) deals with how your customers interact with your site and touches on every aspect of this, from how quickly they can check out to how easy it is for them to find what they’re looking for.

The user interface (UI) is more specifically about the ways in which people can interact with your website. Both elements are crucial for the success of a growing online brand.

Hiring The Right E-Commerce Developer For Your Business

There are a lot of factors to consider when you’re contracting with a development firm. Before hiring an e-commerce developer, ask yourself whether you’ll need extended support after the site is built. If you will, make sure that is part of your agreement.

The Key To Smart Online Advertising

One of the most important aspects of online advertising is picking the right location for your ads. Your audience won’t click on them if they never see them. While it’s tempting to just set up some Facebook ads like everyone else, it could be smarter to find websites where your ideal customers spend time and make an advertising deal directly with the owners.

This kind of deal isn’t always possible, but many established sites will place ads generated from a third-party platform or service, which means you can place your ads through those companies.

Communicating With Your Audience With Email And SMS Marketing

Email is still the standard for online remarketing. In general, the more you communicate with people, the better chance you have of converting them into customers.

SMS marketing is like email marketing on steroids. In my experience, it can be incredibly effective when you do it properly. People tend to read their texts quickly, whereas it may take them longer to open emails.

But the best practice will always be to use email and SMS marketing in harmony. Design your messaging flows to maximize on the engagement of SMS when you need it most.

Boosting Your Customer Experience With Better Fulfillment

These days, it’s very possible for Amazon to deliver many products to your door in 24 hours or less. How will your company compete with that?

Whether you match the speed of delivery or you choose to focus on providing superior quality, you should create a strategy to contend with the e-commerce giants of our world.

Adding Authority With Search Engine Optimization

Is search engine optimization necessary for making money with an e-commerce store? Not necessarily. But is it necessary for scaling an online business and building authority? I believe it is.

SEO is not just about targeting long-tail keywords and getting a trickle of organic traffic from Google. It’s also about ranking for your own branded keywords, like your company’s name. If you don’t show up first in the search results when people look for more information about you, you could be wasting more money than you know on advertising.

These days, not everyone trusts ads. When I see an ad for something interesting, my first instinct is to Google the company’s name … and other buyers are starting to do the same.

NASA’s new technology will roll out to airports, save time for passengers

(NASA) – Bill Nelson, NASA’s Administrator, visited Orlando International Airport in Florida Wednesday and met with aviation leaders to discuss implementing aircraft flight scheduling technology developed by the agency that will soon improve dependability for passengers – which is especially important during peak travel times like the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

In September, the technology that was tested during NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) was transferred to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Large airports across the country – including Orlando International – will soon implement the technology. Nelson discussed the technology transfer with Greater Orlando Aviation Authority CEO Phil Brown.

“NASA’s partnership with the FAA is constantly delivering for the American people, improving the efficiency of the commercial airline industry for the environment and passengers across the country,” Nelson said. “Our flight scheduling technology, which makes it possible for personnel to better coordinate the movements of aircraft while they’re at the airport, will soon help ensure more passengers get off the ground and home for the holidays faster and more efficiently than ever before.”

NASA and the FAA completed nearly four years of surface operations research and testing to calculate gate pushbacks through time-based metering at busy hub airports, so that planes can roll directly to the runway to take off and avoid excessive taxi and hold times, reducing fuel use, emissions, and passenger delays.

“As we deploy this software, the travel experience gets better for passengers all the while aviation’s emissions decrease. It’s a win-win,” said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. “NASA remains a critical partner in the FAA’s efforts to build a sustainable aviation system.”

The FAA plans to deploy NASA’s surface metering technology initially to 27 airports, including Orlando International, as part of a larger investment in airport surface management technology called the Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM) program. Improved efficiency and shifting departure wait time from the taxiway to the gate saves fuel, reduces emissions, and gives airlines and passengers more flexibility in the period prior to leaving the gate.

“The anticipated rollout of the updated TFDM in 2023 aligns with our projections for returning to pre-pandemic passenger traffic the same year,” Brown said. “These updates should result in a smoother experience for the traveling public and enhance ‘The Orlando Experience’ we strive to offer every day at our world-class airport.”

NASA’s ATD-2 team first put their aircraft scheduling technology to the test with real-world users in September 2017 at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. By September 2021, the integrated arrival and departure system (IADS) tools had saved more than 1 million gallons of jet fuel. Those savings were made possible by reducing jet engine run time, which also decreases maintenance costs and saved airlines an estimated nearly $1.4 million in flight crew costs. Overall, passengers were spared 933 hours in flight delays and saved an estimated $4.5 million in value of time.

NASA released a video for media highlighting the successful tests at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and a video on reduced carbon dioxide emissions. NASA has also previously released field demo and concept animation to showcase the full scope of improving travel for airports across the country which you can learn more about on NASA’s ATD-2 page.

NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration portfolio included two other field demonstrations. ATD-1 featured new ground-based and flight deck technologies that enable use of fuel-efficient procedures throughout the entire arrival phase of flight. These technologies are now in the final stages of implementation by the FAA and industry. ATD-3 focused on providing pilots and air traffic managers with options for adjusting aircraft flight paths based on real-time input including wind and weather conditions and other air traffic.

7 SEO Trends to Watch Out for in 2022

Published on November 29, 2021

Authored by Gautam Sharma, Founder & CEO, GautamSEO

Nothing beats search engine optimization when it comes to an affordable, sustainable marketing strategy that helps you drive traffic, generate leads, and get sales. As many as 70{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of marketers consider SEO more effective than PPC.

However, SEO is constantly changing, with Google frequently updating its algorithm and ranking factors. Presently, Google uses over 200 factors to rank websites.

Several new trends have emerged in the SEO space. Learning about these trends and implementing them in your SEO strategy will help you outperform your competitors and rank higher on SERPs.

Let’s look at the top seven SEO trends to watch out for in 2022.

AI Will Revolutionize SEO

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing every industry, from BFSI to healthcare, and SEO is no different. A recent marketing and AI survey report showed that marketers are set to use AI to:

  • Understand customer behavior
  • Develop better content strategies
  • Drive operational productivity

With AI, SEO executives can analyze the performance of their content and websites on search engines. Compared to manual analysis, AI-enabled evaluation is faster, actionable, and more accurate. This has given rise to a new concept — AI SEO.

It has three focus areas:

  • Understanding the idea behind the user’s search query
  • Determining the intent of the query
  • Fetching the most relevant results to ensure customer satisfaction

AI investment in marketing is projected to reach $40 billion by 2025, creating numerous opportunities in SEO.

Voice Search Will Rule the Search Engines

Did you know that over 30{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of web browsing sessions in 2020 were screenless?

Voice assistants like Google Assistant and Siri have popularized voice search, with smart speakers like Alexa and Google Home taking it to another level. Besides, over 50{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of households will likely have a smart speaker by 2022.

These numbers show that voice search is set to rule the search engines in 2022 and beyond, and marketers need to tweak their SEO strategy accordingly.

So, how can you optimize your content for voice search? When people speak to search for something, they tend to say longer phrases. Hence, targeting longer, naturally-sounding phrases is ideal for voice search optimization.

Mobile Friendliness Will Remain Essential

Mobile has already surpassed desktop, as 55{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} of all internet traffic in 2020 came from mobile; 42{4224f0a76978c4d6828175c7edfc499fc862aa95a2f708cd5006c57745b2aaca} came from desktop. Mobile internet users are bolstering, making it essential for marketers to ensure mobile friendliness.

Google also announced mobile-first indexing in 2018. The search engine giant is in the process of using mobile versions of websites for indexing purposes. Furthermore, mobile-first indexing applies by default to websites published after July 1, 2019.

Hence, mobile friendliness will be a key focus area for marketers in the upcoming years.

Here are some tips to make your website mobile-friendly.

  • Make your website design responsive to all screen sizes.
  • Prioritize faster loading speed.
  • Make the CTA buttons larger and easy to click.
  • Include less text and use large font sizes to improve readability.
  • Avoid using too many visuals.

Video Will Rank Better than Text

Video has emerged as one of the pillars of a good SEO strategy. The recent rise of video platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Reels, and Facebook Watch has increased the consumers’ interest in visual content. People are more likely to interact with a video than just plain text.

Including video on your website directly impacts SEO. Video content is 50x more likely to rank higher and get traffic than text-only content. This has encouraged many brands to introduce video to their SEO and marketing strategy. Moving forward, more marketers will leverage video marketing to drive traffic and engagement.

The Increasing Importance of the EAT Principle

Google’s May 2018 Medic update clearly stated that Google would prioritize high-quality and trustworthy content over explicitly-optimized webpages. Traditional SEO practices are still effective, but the needle has shifted significantly towards quality and credibility.

The Medic update introduced Google’s EAT principle for ranking web pages. It stands for:

Hence, authoritative websites that publish trustworthy content written and reviewed by experts will rank higher. This principle applies to all websites but focuses primarily on YMYL (Your Money Your Life) sites. These include websites in healthcare, law, finance, education, and other sectors that could drive life-altering decisions.

Long-Form, High-Quality Content to Rank Better

Long-form content has been the cornerstone of SEO for quite some time, and it will continue to be so. Now, how long should your content be?

The average content length of the top-ranking pages on Google is 2,416 words. For voice search, this number reduces slightly to 2,312 words.

In all, long-form content of over 2,000 words tends to rank higher and get more traffic. Longer content is more detailed and provides complete, in-depth information about a topic. Hence, we’ll see more marketers publishing longer and detailed content in the upcoming years.

Refreshing Old Content for SEO Advantage

Over the past couple of years, refreshing and updating old content has become a secret SEO weapon. Fresh content ranks better than outdated content in most cases, especially if the content is older than two years.

However, developing new content requires more resources. Hence, many marketers are refreshing their older content to regain traffic and maximize their initial investment. This trend will continue to grow in 2022.

Updating older content has two benefits:

  • Users want to get new information. Hence, they click on a search result based on its date. When you update old content, Google shows the Last Updated date, which helps increase click-through rate and traffic.
  • Updating new content helps you align your content with the latest algorithm updates and stay competitive.

What’s Next?

SEO has played a vital role in increasing brand awareness, generating leads, and driving sales for businesses, and it will continue doing so in 2022. However, search engines are getting smarter and pickier about the pages they rank. Therefore, learning about the latest trends is essential.

Now that you have learned about the upcoming trends, it’s time to implement them. Add these elements to your SEO strategy to outperform your competitors and grow your business.
